Chapter 434

It was a pity the report was gone. The Martin Group's public relations department was the fastest in Jipsburg City; no other team could match its effectiveness.

Skylar walked out, saying, "I'm going to make a call."

In the break room, Skylar called Gloria. "Grandma," she began.

Gloria knew why Skylar called. "Are you worried about me because the Williamses came to see me?" she asked cheerily.

Skylar's throat tightened. She was the one who had caused Gloria trouble, yet Gloria wasn't blaming her. Skylar hummed. "They're not important to me. You don't have to waste your energy on them."

"Skye, Joe, and I will treat you well," Gloria reassured warmly. "You don't need to worry about family members who don't treat you as their own. Don't feel saddened by them. They're blind to how excellent you are."

"Alright, Grandma. I'll remember that," Skylar answered gently.

Listening to Skylar's carefully controlled tone, Gloria felt pity. "When I was young, I loved fighting," she continued. "Viola would know all about that! If I were thirty years younger, I would have beaten those Williamses up. I had Edgar chase them away this morning."

"I'm so happy and blessed to have become part of your family," Skylar gushed genuinely. It was true; she'd longed to say that for a long time. Sometimes, startled awake in the middle of the night, she felt her reborn life was a dreamโ€”an obsession born of past hardship. Whenever that happened, she needed time to accept her new reality.

"Oh, my darling," Gloria said. "I smile in my dreams, being so fortunate to have you as my granddaughter-in-law. I must have been a savior in a past life to have you."

After hanging up, Gloria remained unsettled. Thinking about the results of her investigation and the Williamses' bullying of Skylar, tears welled in her eyes. Her heart ached for Skylar.

"Skylar never tells me about her past," she told Edgar. "She's suffered a lot. The next time she's here, make sure the cook prepares all her favorite dishes."

"Don't worry, Mrs. Martin Senior," Edgar consoled her. "I'll ensure your instructions are given to the cooks. Don't be too upset about Mrs. Martin's experiences. If your health suffers, she would be devastated."

Gloria sighed. "Alright, I know. Don't worry about me. I'll take care of myself and do my best to be with them for a few more years."

Skylar then called Joe. He answered quickly.

"Jeffrey and his son went to see you, didn't they?" Skylar asked.

Joe hadn't expected Skylar to know. Their PR team hadn't been fast enough. "Yeah," he answered. "They were barred from the building. They didn't affect the Martin Group."

"You were the one who found evidence of Jeffrey's crimes, right? Thanks," Skylar said.

"Yes, I did it," Joe replied. "You don't need to worry. He's in prison and won't escape. The rest of the Williamses won't cause you any problems." He'd done it, and it was good Skylar knew. She wouldn't regret marrying him.

Skylar's heart raced. Her feelings for Joe had changed. Her grip tightened on her phone. Her tone flattened. "The rest of the Williamses might not cause much chaos, but they're good at making you feel horrible. You you might want to be more careful." She feared Peter would continue to harass Joe.

"Don't worry."

Just as Skylar was about to hang up, Joe said, "Wait."

"What?"

Joe asked darkly, "They broke your heart?"

Skylar paused. "A long time ago, they did. But I stopped caring. I genuinely don't give a damn about them now."

"That's great."
