Chapter 577
Skylar decided to keep Natalie's emotional volatility to herself for now.
"Jeremy met with me yesterday," Natalie said. "He still hasn't agreed to a peaceful divorce. It might involve both our parents, which is what I've been dreading most. It'll worry them, and I'm scared they'll convince me to forgive Jeremy."
Skylar asked, "Are you set on divorcing Jeremy? Would you remain determined even if he'd cheated due to circumstances beyond his control?"
Natalie chuckled. "Circumstances beyond his control? Even if he'd been drugged and slept with Annabelle unknowingly, I couldn't accept it. He might have slept with her involuntarily the first time, but a long time has passed. Is he still sleeping with her involuntarily? That video is constantly replaying in my mind. Even if he could explain his affair, we couldn't go back to how things were. I'd rather give up on a broken marriage than persevere."
Skylar said firmly, "I'll support you no matter what you decide."
Tears welled up in Natalie's eyes. "I'll always support you, too," she replied. Then, feeling overly courteous, she forced a smile. "Quick, try some of this," she said, pointing to the food. "It's our favorite fried chicken. My house is too far from school, so I had it sent over."
Skylar swallowed. "So that's why it looks familiar," she remarked. The fried chicken stall was small, the only one in Jipsburg, near their old school. Probably only the students knew how delicious it was.
"I also had someone buy us smoothies," Natalie reminisced, leaning on Skylar's shoulder. "Even though it's from a chain, the other outlets don't give as many toppings as this one near our school."
Skylar smiled, remembering the past. "Back then, you drank two smoothies a day. Then you saw online that a smoothie-only diet would help you lose weight, so you drank eight a day! In the end, you didn't lose a single pound. You ate stews and barbecues consecutively and gained four pounds instead!"
"You even claimed you were the only one who slimmed down after those fattening meals!" Natalie said admiringly. "You have a miraculous body!"
After finishing their smoothies, Natalie produced a bottle of champagne. It went well with the fried chicken and nuts. They drank until ten o'clock at night.
Suddenly, a call came through.
"Skye, someone's calling you," Natalie slurred.
Skylar, with a low alcohol tolerance, reacted sluggishly. She picked up her phone, accepted the call without checking the caller ID, and greeted, "Hello."
Joe said, "I'm outside Natalie's neighborhood. Tell me when you're ready to leave, and I'll fetch you home."
Skylar blinked. "Fetch me home?" she repeated, thinking she'd misheard. She checked the caller ID. "Oh, it's Joe. Why would you fetch me home? I'm not going home, definitely not."
"Have you been drinking?"
Skylar imagined Joe's cold, raised eyebrow. How terrifying, she thought, but added bravely, "Correct. I've been drinking. I've drunk so much wine!" She hung up immediately.
A chilling gleam flashed in Joe's eyes when he realized she'd hung up. He immediately called Jeremy to ask what floor Natalie was on.
