Chapter 587
โDo be careful on your way home. Call me if anything happens. Iโll be returning to Jipsburg soon,โ Alexander said. He hadn't been feeling well before Joe arrived, and now, feeling rather weak, he watched Joe nod in response.
They finished the paperwork for the transfer quickly. Although Joe had taken Skylar away, Alexander and Harry remained at the hospital to receive IV drips. They had been holding on, but after Joe left, they broke down.
Harry looked at Skylar, lying in the hospital bed. He muttered, โSkye will be alright when she gets back to Jipsburg, right? Jipsburg is filled with talented people. Theyโll find a way to wake her up. They definitely will.โ
Alexander nodded weakly, saying resolutely, โRight, nothing will happen to Skylar. Sheโs a lucky person.โ
They said nothing more. Both were exhausted but couldn't sleep. Every time they closed their eyes, Skylar's collapse replayed in their minds, their hearts racing.
The ambulance sped through the streets. Joe's eyes fell on Skylar, still unconscious. He gently pushed some hair from her face and murmured, โSkylar, please wake up soon.โ She remained still, unresponsive, as if deaf to the world. She would have been irked and bantering with him under normal circumstances.
He grasped her hand; it felt like ice. He tightened his grip, hoping to warm her, but his own palm was burning, yet it was insufficient. His expression froze. He pursed his lips and said, in a tone bordering on threatening, โYou have to wake up, alright?โ
Skylar remained motionless, lying on the stretcher like a broken doll. Despite the numbness spreading through his body, Joe remained bent over, staring at her, as if frozen in place.
They finally arrived at Jipsburg Hospital, where Skylar was moved to a private room. Only then did Joe regain his composure. The specialists examined her throughout the night, eventually hooking her up to an IV drip. Nothing more could be done until they analyzed her medical reports to determine the cause of her collapse.
Paul somberly told Joe, โMr. Martin, you should return home to rest. A caretaker will stay here to watch over Mrs. Martin and will call you immediately if she wakes up.โ
It was five in the morning. He'd been up all night.
โThereโs no need. You should go home. Iโll rest here,โ Joe stated.
Paul glanced at the extra bed beside Skylar's. โIn that case, Iโll buy you some breakfast. Some shops should be open at this hour,โ he said.
Joe hummed in agreement. Before leaving, Paul cast a worried glance at Skylar. Accidents were unpredictable. Just yesterday, she had been perfectly healthy. Now, she lay unconscious, her life hanging in the balance.
Three days later, the doctors delivered their conclusion.
โMr. Martin, you should prepare yourself. The patient may remain in a vegetative state for the rest of her life.โ
