Chapter 602

The intermittent sound of Natalie’s crying drifted from the phone. Her restrained sobs tugged at Skylar’s heart.

“Nath?” Skylar waited patiently for Natalie to compose herself.

After a while, Natalie finally spoke. “Skye, I’m going to resign.”

Skylar knew how much Natalie loved her job. She asked, “Why this sudden decision?”

“Jeremy is a bastard! He went after Mr. Powell.”

“Have you talked to Jeremy?” Skylar asked, furrowing her brows.

Natalie’s tone remained calm. “I just left his office. I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t listen. Don’t worry about me. I’m going to find Mr. Powell now.”

“Take care of yourself.”

“Okay.”

Natalie sat by the roadside. Getting up, she felt a bit dizzy, likely from crying. She hailed a cab, and while en route, Kate called.

“Mom?”

Since learning of Jeremy’s affair, Natalie hadn’t contacted her parents. Perhaps it was a subconscious avoidance. She wanted to escape, unsure how to explain things.

“I fought with your father today, so I’m coming to stay at your place for a few days. I can look after you, too. What’s been going on? Why haven’t you visited?” Kate rushed out.

Natalie bit her lip. “Mom, it’s not convenient right now. Dad will calm down, and I can manage. I’ve been very busy with business trips. I’ll visit once things settle down.”

“I’m at your place. No matter how busy you are, you need to rest in Jipsburg City at night! I’ve cooked dinner, and I’m waiting. I called Jeremy, and he agreed,” Kate said, cutting Natalie off before hanging up.

Natalie felt anxious and frustrated. She tried calling Kate back, but she didn’t answer.

Staring at the familiar streets, Natalie felt profoundly lost.

During Skylar’s lunch break, she received a message from Paul.

“Mrs. Martin, Mr. Martin is very busy today, so he asked me to book a restaurant. I’m sending you the address.”

The message included a location pin.

Looking at the location, Skylar felt dazed. Then she realized Joe, when with her, always accommodated her preferences. Details she’d overlooked now seemed significant.

It struck her that Joe wasn’t as indifferent as she’d thought. Lately, they'd been getting along well at home, deliberately avoiding certain topics.

As she pondered this, Edgar called. “Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Martin… Senior asked me to inform you not to come to Pearlhall Residence today. She suggests you and Mr. Martin celebrate his birthday privately.”

In previous years, Joe’s birthday had been celebrated with Gloria at Pearlhall Residence. Gloria wanted a more intimate celebration this year.

“His birthday?” Skylar responded reflexively, then remembered. She’d seen his birthdate on their marriage certificate.

“Yes, today is Mr. Martin’s birthday,” Edgar said, perhaps worried about their relationship's progress.
