Chapter 618

Having just finished dinner, Skylar wasn't hungry and declined the cookies. Jenny noticed this and considered Skylar's behavior hypocritical, questioning Joe's attraction to such a seemingly pretentious woman.

"Skylar, are you avoiding the cookies because you're worried about your weight?" Jenny asked.

Slightly irritated by Jenny's tactlessness, Skylar merely hummed in response. Seeing Skylar's indifference, Jenny turned to Joe. "Galaxy Villa looks different. Did you renovate?"

She subtly attempted to signal her prior familiarity with the house, but Skylar didn't react.

"No, it's the same," Joe replied.

Jenny nodded. "I've been in Korel City for the past few years, so I'd forgotten what Galaxy Villa looked like."

Joe glanced at the weary-looking Skylar. "Is Rowan coming to pick you up?" he asked Jenny.

"I don't think so. A friend dropped me off," Jenny replied. Pausing, she looked at Skylar. "Skylar, it's difficult to get a taxi now. Could I stay here tonight?"

This was a calculated move. Skylar's response, either way, would serve Jenny's purpose.

If Skylar agreed, Jenny could spend time with Joe, reminiscing about the past. If Skylar refused, it would reveal a less accommodating side to Joe.

Skylar's smile faltered. She turned to Joe and said, "I'm tired. I'll rest now. You two can chat." Skylar was incredulous that Jenny would attempt to manipulate her, seemingly oblivious to her intentions.

Jenny was surprised by Skylar's directness. She hadn't expected such blatant dismissal. Did Skylar not care what Joe thought of her? She seemed fearless. But Jenny was even more surprised by Joe's reaction. His simple nod left her feeling awkward.

Joe wouldn't have treated her this way in the past. He had always been very kind. He would have defended her against any bullying. But now, with Skylar's pointed indifference making Jenny uncomfortable, Joe seemed to indulge Skylar. A pang of pain pierced her.

Joe had been very supportive when she underwent surgery in Korel City. But now… what had Skylar done to him? It felt as if she'd cast some sort of spell.

After Skylar left, Jenny's tears flowed freely. She called out to Joe, her voice choked with sorrow. "Joe…"

Joe's expression darkened. He glanced at the cookies, then lit a cigarette. Jenny watched intently, captivated. To her, no one compared to Joe. Even something as ordinary as smoking captivated her, and his every movement commanded her admiration.

"Still haven't figured it out?" Joe's voice was cold.

Jenny was momentarily stunned. "..."

She struggled to understand. As a glimmer of understanding dawned, she felt herself approaching a crucial insight.
