Chapter 629
Jeremy froze. He gazed at Natalie intently and said softly, "I'll wait for you outside."
Natalie avoided his gaze. She knew how deeply her rejection had hurt him. She'd agreed to return and try to forget what happened, but now…
She stared at the pasta softening in the boiling water, lost in thought. When she finished preparing two plates, Jeremy had changed from his pajamas into a suit and was seated at the dining table, scrolling through news on his phone. It felt like a scene from their past.
Disoriented, Natalie finally remembered the plates. She placed one before Jeremy.
He looked at the pasta, then at her. "Nath, let's take things slowly," he said softly.
Tears welled in Natalie's eyes. She wanted to speak, but no words came.
"I know what you're going through, Nath. Believe me, I feel the same," Jeremy continued.
Unable to meet his gaze, Natalie said, "I believe you. Let's eat now; it'll get cold." She hadn't been paying attention and had overcooked the pasta.
"Alright."
They ate in silence.
After breakfast, as Jeremy was about to leave, Natalie said, "I'll be going to work later."
Jeremy frowned.
Seeing this, Natalie quickly added, "I was much happier at work. I can't stay home doing nothing all day." She didn't want to continue living as she had after marrying Jeremy. Before his affair, she had overthought things; now it was worse. She couldn't stay home.
After a moment, Jeremy conceded, "Alright."
While Skylar was on her lunch break, she received an overseas call. The number looked like a scam; she'd seen similar numbers published online by cybercrime organizations.
"Hello?"
"Save me… Quickly, save me… I beg you. I made a mistake. It's all because of Christopher. He brought me into this! I beg you, Skylar!"
Skylar recognized Maisy's weak, whispering voice, seemingly afraid to speak loudly. She hadn't heard from Maisy in a long time; Maisy hadn't contacted Janine or appeared with Kenny when they'd searched for her. Skylar had previously ignored it, but Maisy's mention of Christopher was significant. Had they been together all this time?
Considering Maisy's history of scheming, Skylar suspected a trap. Maisy often concocted absurd plans.
"Can you use a foreign number to make calls domestically?" Skylar asked Caleb, who'd just returned from an overseas trip. He glanced at the number. "This probably isn't a scam. It's a private number, likely from overseas, specifically the Askea region."
"The Askea region?" Skylar repeated. Maisy's plea sounded genuine, but her fate held no personal consequence for Skylar.
Hours later, she received another call.
"Skylar, help me pay them a million. They'll release me if they get a million. I can't survive here. They've forced me to entertain guests, even kept me in dog cages. I beg you. I'll do anything if you help me!"
