Jenny stared at her phone. Rowan had hung up. Grimness settled over her. Why was he forcing her into a decision? He knew she liked Joe, yet he’d announced his engagement so abruptly. She’d thought he’d never settle down. Countless women had kept him company for years. Wasn't he remaining unattached because of his feelings for her?

She bit her lip, lost in thought. Several women passed behind her. Composing herself, she entered the building.

Joe, having taken Skylar's car to work, had accidentally left documents in it. Free, he'd asked Lucas to drive him to the Gardner Group. He'd alerted Alexander, gaining entry to find Skylar. However, he hadn't told Skylar he was coming.

Seeing Skylar engrossed in her work, he could hardly look away. He stood before the glass windows, watching her. For the first time, he considered Caleb a nuisance, standing so close to Skylar. Caleb, who looked barely pubescent, openly gazed at Skylar. His blatant affection was even more shameless than Joe's, Skylar's legal husband.

Joe pursed his lips.

Alexander, hurrying over after finishing his work, saw Joe's intense stare through the window—a glare that seemed to burn holes in the glass. One look, and Alexander knew Joe was completely captivated by Skylar.

He'd heard rumors in the past few days that Edwin disapproved of Joe and Skylar's relationship.

"When Skye's absorbed in her work, she seldom notices her surroundings," Alexander praised generously. "Indeed, she's mastered Viola's teachings. She might even surpass Viola's skills." He was subtly praising Skylar's excellence, implying Joe had been incredibly fortunate to marry her. Furthermore, Skylar had helped many of Alexander's old friends, all of whom were seeking ways to reciprocate her kindness. However, Alexander mused, not everyone deserved such kindness. As elders, they had a broader perspective; Skylar's less privileged background seemed to cast doubt on the suitability of the match, leaving ambiguous who was truly benefiting whom.

Joe nodded. "She is indeed talented." He'd seldom seen this side of Skylar. Witnessing it firsthand made his heart skip a beat.

Just then, Skylar noticed Joe. Through the window, she felt disoriented, thinking she'd imagined him.

Surprised, Caleb exclaimed, "Joe?"

Skylar put away her work and went outside.

"I left my documents in your car," Joe explained.

Skylar understood. "I wasn't paying attention to the car's contents. I'll check."

"Alright."

They walked toward the elevator, side by side. Alexander and Caleb were utterly ignored. They exchanged glances.

Caleb, jealous, complained, "Skylar's awesome. Look at Joe's arrogant face, Grandpa. He acts like everyone owes him money. He doesn't treat Skylar right." He seemed poised to demand Joe leave Skylar if he couldn't treat her properly, implying Caleb would step in and treat her like a queen.
