Chapter 657
Aiken said earnestly, โSkylar, youโve done so much for us today. Youโre a benefactor. Iโll ensure you receive a generous reward later.โ Before dinner, heโd doubted her abilities and questioned her motives for befriending Simona. Aiken's rise had been arduous, fraught with challenges and schemes. Those appearing kind often proved the most dangerous. Repeated betrayals had made him wary, yet Skylar seemed genuine. He felt he could trust her.
โSimona and I are friends; thereโs no need for a fuss,โ Skylar replied, unconcerned about compensation. Sheโd helped out of friendship; payment hadn't been a consideration. From the start, she'd felt a connection with Simona; their meeting had seemed fated, a feeling confirmed by the discovery of the fake amulets.
Aiken let the matter drop. Half an hour after Skylar left, he departed as well. Simona, unconcerned with Aiken's plans, focused on acquiring high school textbooks and practice tests, determined to regain her peak performance.
Aiken went to another residence where he managed his affairs, preferring to keep Simona distant from these unsavory matters. One person dealing with such issues was enough. A dozen photographs of Skylar lay spread out. They were discreetly taken, yet her features were clear.
โAre you sure about this deal, Mr. Parkinson?โ Egbert Hewitt asked. Aiken had initially planned to dine with Simona and postpone the decision. Egbert was surprised by his unexpected return, sensing something amiss.
โNo, weโre not accepting this offer. The Parkinson family will not participate,โ Aiken stated, resolutely collecting the photos. Heโd intended to give them to Egbert but instead stored them safely in a drawer.
Egbert was astonished. โThey offered a fortune! Are you really turning it down? Do you have a reason, Mr. Parkinson?โ He wondered if Aiken had developed feelings for the woman in the photographs.
โNo particular reason. Just tell them weโre not interested,โ Aiken replied firmly.
Egbert asked no further questions.
