Chapter 658
The Parkinson family, known for their discretion and dependability in Jipsburg City, had surprisingly declined the Martins' business offer. The offer was exorbitant; Aiken's refusal of such a lucrative opportunity baffled Molly. Although relatively young, Aiken was known for his reliability and ruthlessness. Under his leadership, the Parkinson family had flourished even more than under his parents'. His rejection of this proposition was uncharacteristic.
Molly, her face lined with anxiety, voiced her concerns to Edwin. He, too, was surprised. “Refused? Did they give a reason? Or did they find our offer insufficient? The amount I offered should be higher than anything Aiken usually encounters.”
Molly replied, “I asked, but received no explanation. They only stated that Aiken himself rejected the deal. We’ll need to find someone else, darling. If we want this done discreetly, we need someone truly capable.”
Molly, troubled, wondered if Aiken knew of Skylar's connection to Joe and was avoiding the situation. However, that didn't seem like Aiken's style; he was adept at handling such matters without leaving a trace. Still, she remained curious.
After deliberation, Edwin decided to call Aiken directly. While establishing contact could leave a trace, the circumstances necessitated it. Aiken answered after a few rings.
“Aiken, this is Edwin Martin,” Edwin began warmly.
“Mr. Martin, hello,” Aiken replied, surprised but quickly guessing the reason. Even during his parents' lifetime, contact with the Martins had been minimal; a call from Edwin was unexpected. He assumed it concerned the rejected business proposal.
Edwin hummed thoughtfully, then said, “I’m sure you understand why I’m calling. It’s about your refusal of my request. I’d like to know the reason.”
Aiken, unsurprised by Edwin's directness, calmly replied, “The reason is simple. Skylar is a benefactor to our family.”
“A benefactor?” Edwin was astonished. He couldn't fathom how a young woman from the countryside could be considered a benefactor to the Parkinsons. He suspected it might be a pretext.
Aiken simply replied, “Yes.”
After the call, Edwin appeared lost in thought. Molly, noticing this, asked, “Darling, what’s wrong?” Edwin’s seriousness was unusual.
“Do you know what Aiken’s response was?” Edwin asked gravely.
Molly shook her head.
Edwin sneered, “He said Skylar is their family's benefactor.”
“She’s a young woman in her twenties, barely knows anyone in Jipsburg, and only works with Mr. Gardner Senior’s team—how could she be considered a benefactor to the Parkinson family?” Molly was astonished. She recalled Skylar's striking beauty and understated demeanor, surmising her appeal stemmed from hidden skills.
Molly wondered if Aiken harbored feelings for Skylar, though that seemed unlikely.
