Chapter 665
Gloria sighed, feeling helpless. Considering Edwin's actions, however, Joe's behavior was understandable. Though she'd been with the Martin family for many years, since her husband's passing, the family had become increasingly fragmented. Each member harbored their own thoughts, and she could only adapt to the changes rather than influence them. Superficially, everyone showed her respect.
Gloria recalled Viola's words: some things couldn't be changed by a single person's efforts. Times and people evolved. Edwin, once good-natured, had grown distant as he aged and was influenced by others. Their relationship had deteriorated, especially after his marriage to Molly twenty years prior. Now, Edwin's interference in Joe's affairs mirrored the actions of other family members.
"Just in time; I was craving an apple," Gloria said, quickly adjusting her demeanor despite her heavy heart. At her age, she had learned to manage such emotions.
Skylar offered the apple. Even troubled, Gloria's mood lightened at the sight of Skylar; her presence seemed to soothe her turmoil.
Joe noticed the shift in Gloria's mood and subtly glanced at Skylar, whose calming effect was apparent. Being with her always brought a sense of peace, regardless of challenges. Difficulties never seemed overwhelming.
Noticing Joe's gaze, Skylar asked, "Would you like an apple, too?"
Before Joe could answer, Gloria huffed, "Let him peel his own apple. Don't spoil him, Skye."
Joe looked much healthier lately; his complexion was rosy and lively, a noticeable improvement despite recent difficulties. This was undoubtedly due to Skylar's influence; without her, his condition might have been drastically different.
Joe's lips curved into a faint smile. "I'll do it."
Skylar handed him the knife. He peeled the apple, but instead of eating it, he gave it to Skylar.
Seeing this, Gloria smiled and nodded approvingly. "Skye, you eat first. These apples are exceptionally sweet."
"Sure," Skylar replied, momentarily surprised by the warmth in Joe's eyes as she accepted the apple.
Observing their tender exchange, Gloria and Edgar exchanged a knowing glance. Gloria was pleased; Joe seemed to understand care, and Skylar's influence was evident.
After leaving the hospital, Joe drove Skylar to work. They encountered Caleb, who raised an eyebrow at the sight of Skylar leaving Joe's car. He waited for her.
As Skylar approached, Caleb asked with concern, "Did Joe give you any trouble?" He'd always suspected mistreatment; Skylar's puffy eyes and weary appearance confirmed his suspicions. She'd yawned several times in the car. They'd talked late the previous night, and she'd had to rise early for the hospital. She was exhausted and longed for coffee.
Caleb's question interrupted her thoughts. She smiled and replied, "He treats me well. He wouldn't hurt me."
"Don't think you can fool me. You look exhausted. If he's not mistreating you, why are you so worn out?" Caleb stared intently, his worry evident.
