Chapter 671

Natalie stared at her phone. A WhatsApp message from Jeremy simply read, "I could wait." The phrase felt like an accusation, implying she was heartless and unwilling to face their troubles together. He had been unfairly targeted and was in a difficult situation, yet she was contemplating leaving him. Even her mother's frequent calls felt like surveillance, as if her behavior were being monitored.

They arrived at the event venue. Natalie buried her anxieties as they exited the car, revealing nothing of her inner turmoil. Skylar had just ended a call with Joe; they were meeting at the hospital later to have dinner with Gloria. She had just clocked out of work and was about to leave when someone stopped her.

"Skylar!" a deep voice called.

Skylar saw the person blocking her path. After two days of peace, another confrontation, this time with a stranger.

Chapter 21

It was Amelia. She glared at Skylar, her face full of anger. Amelia seemed to have completely forgotten Skylar's years of care at the hospital.

"Skylar, should we call security?" a colleague asked.

Skylar shook her head. "You all go ahead. I'm fine."

Her colleagues left; they knew her well enough to trust her assessment. They were at the company entrance, so the situation seemed unlikely to escalate.

Once alone with Amelia, Skylar's changed demeanor became apparent. Amelia had never seen Skylar like this before; she felt like she was interacting with a stranger. This caused Amelia considerable discomfort.

"Skylar, are you ashamed of abandoning my son and afraid to let your colleagues find out? Do you think you can enjoy wealth and luxury after leaving him? Those men are just using you!" Amelia burst out.

Christopher had been acting out since leaving Jipsburg City, refusing to return to Liberty County. He drank heavily, lamenting his actions and insulting Maisy, yet remained fixated on his regret over Skylar. Amelia couldn't understand his obsession; with his prospects, he could have any woman.

"Finished? You can leave," Skylar said. Her usual respect for elders didn't extend to Amelia.

Amelia's eyes widened. "What did you say? You want me to leave? Skylar, remember how you used to try to please me? Do you think you can disregard me and my son now that you have new support? If you're ever abandoned and beg for help, I won't give you a chance!"

"Best save the daydreaming for another time," Skylar replied, pushing Amelia away.

Stunned, Amelia exclaimed, "You'll regret this! You'll definitely regret this!" Christopher was popular; Skylar's decision, she believed, would ultimately be a mistake.
