Skylar nodded lightly and looked around. Paul and Howard were the only ones in the room. "Where's Joe?" she asked.

"He went to handle a few things. He just texted, saying he'll be at the hospital soon," Paul explained, declining to elaborate on Joe's whereabouts. The details of Joe's actions would terrify cowardly people.

Paul suspected what had transpired; after all, he possessed evidence of Edwin's wrongdoing.

Skylar didn't pursue the subject. "Does Mrs. Martin Senior know I was kidnapped?" she asked.

"Yes," Paul replied, nodding. Gloria wasn't the only one; Alexander and George also knew, and their behind-the-scenes efforts had ensured her swift recovery. It had been a very close call; half an hour later, and Skylar would have been raped.

Skylar said hurriedly, "Help me tell Mrs. Martin Senior. Ask her not to worry; I'm perfectly fine."

"Alright, I'll call her now."

Paul made the call in front of her, bringing Skylar relief.

A few minutes later, Paul escorted the doctor to Skylar's room. As they entered, Jenny appeared. She had overheard their discussion of Skylar's condition—Skylar had awakened, and Drake, Skylar's physician, was reassuring Paul. He confirmed that Skylar's wounds had been treated and posed no further problems.

Jenny's suspicions were confirmed; something had happened to Skylar. While she was ill with a fever and needed company, everyone had rushed to her side. Why hadn't Skylar died? Why weren't her wounds fatal? What exactly had happened?

Joe's behavior was telling. He'd ignored her calls and texts. She stood outside, listening to their conversation. Joe said gently, "Don't worry. Everyone who hurt you will pay, as long as I'm here."

"Yeah, I believe you," Skylar replied weakly.

Jenny saw how badly Skylar was hurt. Jealousy stung. Despite growing up with Joe, he'd never shown her such care.
