Chapter 73
Skylar answered the call just as Natalie’s voice erupted, a torrent of curses. “That bitch Maisy is unbelievable! First, she suppressed the buzz about this, and now she claims the woman in the video isn't her. Then, she hired a look-alike to claim she's the one frequently seen with Christopher!
“Maisy has completely cleared her name! Even Christopher says the woman in the photos and videos is that look-alike. It's her who has a crush on him, and the video was taken out of context.
“Worse, the look-alike admitted it and apologized for causing trouble for Maisy and Christopher. With a few fake comments, Maisy and Christopher are suddenly innocent!”
Skylar sneered. “They must have spent a fortune on this.”
“What goes around comes around. They’ll get their karma. My dear Skye, I’m going crazy with their antics. Don’t stand me up tonight, okay?” Natalie reminded her.
“I won’t. See you at 6:00 p.m.”
After hanging up, Skylar noticed Joe watching her. Her lips parted slightly. The matter was settled, leaving her with mixed feelings. She didn’t know what to say.
Joe spoke first. “Do the Williamses treat you poorly?”
It was a question she’d heard often lately, but she hadn’t expected Joe to ask. She looked ahead, her gaze deep, as if hiding unspoken troubles, but replied calmly, “They have nothing to do with me.”
Although not a direct answer, her statement was clear enough. Joe glanced at her thoughtfully.
Meanwhile, Maisy stared at her credit card, which showed a balance of only one hundred thousand dollars, with a dark expression. Five million dollars! That’s what Amy Wright, her former college classmate, had demanded.
Amy had undergone extensive plastic surgery in college to resemble Maisy. After graduation, many classmates mistook her for Maisy's sister. Maisy had thought Amy was vain, but she hadn't expected this. Amy was being incredibly greedy, demanding five million dollars out of hand.
But considering her reputation, five million dollars was insignificant—as long as it didn't affect her marriage to Joe.
Noticing Maisy’s low spirits, Samuel said, “I’d feel upset too. Now that everyone knows you’ve been wronged, let Skylar apologize when she returns. She’s always jumping to conclusions. This should be a lesson for her.”
“Samuel, call Skye and ask her to come home today. We need a serious family conversation,” Sadie said. She felt uneasy about Skylar, as if Skylar had done something wrong.
Samuel rolled his eyes. “I’ve tried, Mom, but she won’t answer. Let’s leave it. Look at the trouble she’s caused lately. I’m embarrassed to have her as a sister.”
“Maisy, why don’t you call her?” Sadie suggested.
Maisy felt even worse. Why was Sadie suddenly so concerned about Skylar? She kept her displeasure to herself. “Fine, I’ll call her now.”
The phone rang unanswered. Maisy looked at Sadie helplessly. “Mom, she isn’t answering. We don’t even know where she’s staying. How can we find her?”
She suspected Skylar might be with an older man, engaging in despicable acts. How could she answer her calls?
Sadie frowned. “I’ll call Janine and ask how she raised Skye. How could she teach Skye to be a mistress? My daughter has been corrupted by her.”
