Skylar was still recovering from her injury, worried about scarring. They chose a casual restaurant with mild dishes; they both loved chicken soup.

“Do you have any engagements after lunch?” Skylar asked.

Natalie shook her head. “Nope.”

“In that case, come shopping with me. I want to buy a car.”

Natalie readily agreed. “Alright, I’ve wanted one too. Taking cabs is inconvenient. I sometimes need Mr. Powell to send me home late at night, and cabs aren’t always safe.”

Natalie noticed Skylar’s distraction and avoided asking about her injury or the car accident. Initially, she’d thought Joe cared deeply for Skylar, but now their relationship seemed troubled.

Leaving the restaurant, they encountered Jeremy, Rowan, and their friends, all acquaintances of Skylar’s. She discreetly observed Jeremy’s reaction to Natalie. Rowan touched his nose, glancing between Jeremy and Natalie before turning to Skylar. He seemed to want to speak to her but hesitated. Even with the opportunity, the moment didn't feel right.

The other men remained silent, observing the interaction. They didn't address Natalie as Mrs. Hughes or greet Skylar. Rowan had mentioned Joe and Skylar’s relationship, describing his love as sincere, but everyone knew Vera had returned, leaving Joe's intentions uncertain. Jeremy gazed at Natalie, a complex mix of emotions in his eyes.

Seeing Jeremy, Natalie’s smile faltered. They hadn’t spoken since the courtroom. She’d been busy and avoided thinking about him, fearing self-recrimination. A strong urge to escape washed over her.

Jeremy approached gently. “Were you guys having lunch?” He spoke as if they weren’t divorced.

Skylar glanced at Natalie, who paled slightly but managed a weak smile. “Yeah, we just finished.”

Natalie’s distance from Jeremy was obvious. His eyes darkened, but he said nothing. She linked arms with Skylar and they hailed a cab. Skylar nodded to Jeremy and Rowan before leaving.

Jeremy watched Natalie go, noting her complete avoidance of him. Rowan exchanged knowing glances with his friends before they departed.

Later, Rowan asked Jeremy, “A friend at the courthouse told me you and Natalie divorced. Is that true?” He’d hesitated to ask before, but their interaction confirmed his suspicions. It seemed Natalie had learned about Annabelle and couldn't reconcile it, leading to the divorce.
