Chapter 750

Everyone in the ward fell silent. Not a single word was spoken. Moments before, whispers had circulated, exchanging theories about Skylar and Sadie. Gossip, after all, thrived everywhere. Suddenly, a sense of karmic retribution hung in the air; Sadie seemed abandoned by the world.

What kind of parent wished suffering upon their child? Most would bear the pain themselves. Yet, Sadie had hoped Skylar, not she, had been in the accident. Blood was thicker than water; even the cruellest tiger wouldn't devour its cubs. This, Skylar realised, explained Sadie's predicament.

“This is what you truly think,” Skylar said coldly.

Sadie was stunned, then panicked. “I–I… That’s not what I meant! I’m your mother. You can’t escape your legal responsibility. Peter can’t afford to care for me. They have no money for a maid. But you’re rich! You could hire ten, and it wouldn’t dent your wealth. I didn’t give birth to you for nothing! I’m your mother. Janine only raised you. Why treat her like a queen, but not me?”

Skylar saw no reason to continue listening. She turned to leave.

Just as she reached the door, Peter and Samuel burst in, glaring.

“You’re not leaving tonight,” Samuel growled, face flushed. “You’ll take responsibility! Mom’s right. Why didn’t you push her out of the way? You should be the disabled one! You’ve made our lives hell!”

They had been eavesdropping. Their desired outcome—Skylar assuming responsibility for Sadie—hadn't materialized.

Peter said grimly, “Mom’s not doing well. The doctor says she won’t last long. You’ve never shown gratitude for her. In her final hours, we’re giving you a chance to avoid future regrets. You’re wealthy now, with Joe’s backing. You can provide better care, specialists. Maybe she'd live longer.”

His speech was clearly rehearsed.

Skylar stared coldly. She’d thought they’d changed, hadn’t disturbed her peace in months. Separate lives seemed best. But they weren't giving up without a fight.

Peter and Samuel felt uneasy under Skylar’s silence.

“W–What are you looking at? We’re waiting for you to transfer Mom to a better hospital. Joe owns a private one, excellent facilities. One word, and she’d be there,” Peter insisted, eyes narrowed.

Samuel added, “Yeah! Don’t be petty. We’re your brothers! I’m your biological brother. When Charles had his scandal, you helped. When I was in crisis, you did nothing. Whose sister are you?”

News of Charles and Felicia’s scandal had gone viral. Samuel had even used influencers to damage Charles' reputation, wanting him to experience the industry's rejection. Ironically, Charles' PR team managed the situation, and Felicia was banned. The disparity in Skylar's responses was glaring. Why help Charles, but not Peter?
