Chapter 749
Skylar took a few steps forward. Suddenly, Sadie opened her eyes, a burst of energy animating her. Completely conscious, she stared at Skylar, reaching out a hand.
โSkye, it was all my fault. Forgive me. Forgive Mom, alright?โ
The others, hearing โMom,โ glanced at Skylar. Their relationship was unclear; Sadieโs plea for forgiveness hinted at past wrongdoing, contradicting Skylarโs statement that they weren't related. A complex story lay beneath the surface. They looked down, fearing to speak. Resolving family affairs as outsiders was difficult; something significant must have transpired between them.
Skylar walked back. Hope flickered in Sadie's eyes, which bulged, terrifyingly prominent in her thin frame.
โYouโve always been a kind, obedient girl. I knew you would forgive me. Youโre here to save me, right? You still see me as your mother, donโt you? I knew it! I saw it in my dream! The way we treated you was unacceptable; even animals didnโt deserve it. I know Iโve made a mistake. Iโll treat you like a princess in the future, alright? I wasnโt in my right mind. How could I treat you like that? Youโre my biological daughter! How could I have treated you like that? Please give me a chance to change.โ
Only now did she comprehend the depth of her cruelty, realizing her loved ones were unreliable. Her sons, whom sheโd been so proud of, and even Maisy, whom she'd genuinely cared for, had all abandoned her to languish. A proud woman, reduced to an animal's existence. Had she not hurt Skylar, treated her well, she would have been cared for. She didn't want to die. Sheโd been lost in a self-deceptive delusion. Sadie didn't want to die.
Skylar's silence sent Sadie into a frantic state.
โI know Iโve made a mistake! I will be a good mother in the future. You didnโt grow up by my side, and when you finally came home, I was under Maisyโs spell. I didnโt have the chance to be a good mother to you. Give me a chance, alright? My brothers arenโt treating me well. After my accident, they didnโt care. Sometimes I went days without a hot meal; they bathed me once a month and expected me to shower myself! Iโm disabled; I canโt even move. Theyโre devils. Skye, youโre kind. Show some pity. Take me home, alright? Get some help for me.โ
Sadie's speech accelerated, fueled by terror at losing Skylar. She poured out her heart, unaware of how selfish her pleas sounded. She begged forgiveness, yet demanded even more.
Skylar said coldly, โIn your dream, did I end up worse off than you?โ
Sadie was stunned. Guilt etched her face. โIโIโฆ Well, the dream wasn't real. I only came to my senses through it. I was awakened to how wrong I had been.โ
Even semi-conscious, she knew the dream reflected reality; Skylarโs presence had altered it. Otherwise, Skylar, not Sadie, would have been in the accident.
Skylar chuckled. โA leopard canโt change its spots, Ms. Coleman. Stop making a fuss. Stay in the hospital.โ
Sadie glared, a twisted expression contorting her features. She shrieked, โYou shouldโve been the one in the accident! Why didnโt you push me away? Why werenโt you hit by the car? Itโs all your fault! It shouldnโt have been me! You caused our familyโs demise. Itโs all you!โ
