Chapter 772
Jenny continued, โIf only someone could be here with me right now and tell me the past two days were just a nightmare, maybe I wouldnโt feel so helpless. Is everyone around me destined to leave eventually? If Iโd known it would end like this, I should have returned to the countryside and lived a simpler life. At least there, people wouldnโt have rejected me because of my background.โ
Her words conveyed a deep sense of despair. Rowan, lost in thought, wondered what had transpired in her life over the past couple of days, contemplating her distress.
After showering, Minerva found Rowan engrossed in his phone. โIโm heading out. See you at the courthouse tomorrow.โ
She wasnโt sure if he heard her, as he didnโt look up. His attention remained fixed on his screen. Minerva wasnโt concerned; their relationship was strictly transactionalโa family alliance. Having had a child, Rowan was free to live as he pleased. However, she herself was battling fertility issues.
Moments later, Rowan heard the door close and snapped out of his daze, realizing Minerva had left. He glanced at the door, then back at his phone. After a brief pause, he dialed a number.
The call was answered immediately.
โRowan? You finally called me back. I feel like everyone is abandoning me, and I donโt know what to do.โ Jenny was surprised heโd called. It seemed he had seen her Messenger messageโa gamble she hadnโt expected to pay off.
โWhat happened?โ Rowanโs voice was indifferent.
Jennyโs unease grew. โIโฆ I had a nightmare. I was being bullied and couldnโt fight back. Everyone was blaming me, saying it was all my fault. I tried to explain, but no one believed me. Not even you, Rowan. It felt so realโฆ I was terrified.โ
She couldnโt bring herself to tell him about last nightโs events. She felt tainted, no matter how many times she tried to cleanse herself.
โIt was just a nightmare?โ Rowanโs tone grew colder.
โYes, Rowan, it was terrifying. I was really scared.โ Jennyโs sobs were audible.
Rowanโs lips pressed into a thin line. โStop being so dramatic, Jenny. If you keep this up, your nightmare might become reality.โ
He had been deceived again. With that, he ended the call.
Jenny was stunned. The disconnect echoed in her ear. She couldnโt believe heโd hung up, the cruelty cutting deep. It felt as if he had no understanding of her torment, both physical and emotional. All she wanted was to be with the person she loved, yet even that seemed a transgression. The universe felt relentless in its punishment, pushing her into despair. Rowan, ignorant of her suffering, had only compounded her pain. She wondered if he felt satisfied. And Skylarโif she knew, sheโd probably be thrilled, no longer fearing Joe would be taken from her.
Jenny would bear this pain alone.
As Skylar was about to leave work, she received an unexpected call from Jenny.
โHello?โ
โSkylar, you and Joe are never going to happen. Do you even realize that, aside from Mrs. Martin Senior, no one in the Martin family actually likes you?โ Jenny spat, anger lacing her voice.
Skylar remained cold and indifferent. โAre you done?โ
Jenny continued her angry outburst, but Skylar ended the call and slipped her phone back into her bag. Skylar understood that Jenny was prone to impulsive behavior, but the constant drama was beginning to wear on her patience. She probably ran into some trouble with Joe earlier today and was now taking it out on her. Skylar figured Jenny was erratic. She made her way downstairs a few minutes later to clock out. Just then, a familiar voice called out. It wasn't Jenny; it was Natale.
โSo, guess where I am?โ Nataleโs voice rang with excitement.
Skylar smiled and asked, โWhere?โ
