It was a relief they had fastened their seatbelts.

“Mr. Martin, there’s been an accident.”

Skylar and Joe exchanged glances before looking ahead. A car ahead had braked suddenly after striking a pedestrian. Although only minutes had passed, a crowd had gathered, and the road was severely congested.

Skylar noticed blood pooling beneath the left wheel of the car in front of them. The victim appeared seriously injured.

“Mr. Martin, this road will remain congested for quite some time.” They would be lucky to leave within thirty minutes.

Skylar glanced at the time; it was already 7:00 PM.

Joe surveyed their surroundings. “There’s a mall over there. Would you like to go?”

She followed his gaze to the mall, a place she recognized. With the changing seasons, it seemed a good time for shopping.

“Alright, let’s go.”

They exited their car, passing the vehicle involved in the accident. Medics and police had arrived; the victim would undoubtedly be transported to the hospital.

Suddenly, Skylar recalled a previous accident, from before her rebirth. The agony of her fractured legs, caused when a car ran over her, still terrified her.

“Are you afraid?” Joe noticed Skylar’s pallor after witnessing the accident scene. It was a bloody scene; the victim seemed unconscious.

Skylar wasn’t scared, per se; she simply wished to avoid a repeat of her past trauma. Life was unpredictable; self-preservation was her only course of action.

Joe and Skylar strolled leisurely through the mall. Skylar first purchased skincare products, nearing the end of her current supply. Afterward, they browsed women’s clothing. Finding some items she liked, Skylar went to try them on while Joe waited patiently on a nearby couch. Wishing to avoid keeping him waiting long, she changed quickly.

Emerging from the dressing room, she admired her reflection. She had chosen a summer dress paired with a woolen cardigan, a look she found very flattering. The simple dress and cardigan cost approximately ten thousand dollars. Though Skylar was now working and earning her own money, she still considered it expensive, having forgotten, despite prior visits, that this mall carried high-end merchandise.

Just as Skylar was about to remove the outfit, a woman announced, “Her outfit looks good. I like it. Bring me an identical set in her size. I’d like to try it.”

The voice sounded familiar, but Skylar couldn’t place it. Turning, she saw Felicia.

Felicia froze, momentarily stunned to see Skylar. She hadn’t expected Skylar to be trying on clothes, nor had she anticipated such a striking figure. Skylar made the simple outfit look remarkably sexy, yet far from cheap.
