Chapter 844
Jenny refused to become Edwin's lover. He was older than her father, for goodness sake. She resented the idea of bending to his every whim.
Edwin looked terrible. He chuckled coldly and promised, "You'll be begging me for it in the future." He then left abruptly.
Jenny watched him go, freezing for a moment before letting out a cold laugh. She mumbled, "Beg you? Never. If I can't be with Joe, why would I beg you for anything?"
"I need to figure out how to regain Joe's trust!"
Denton's room was crowded. His three children and numerous grandchildren filled the space. Everyone who could be there was; those absent were gravely ill.
Hector, Denton's favorite grandchild, had been in an accident that day. The news devastated Denton, and terrified everyone else.
The Ruells, one of Jipsburg's most powerful families, had never faced such a series of crises. Initially, they dismissed the events as coincidences. However, the accumulating accidents made that explanation increasingly improbable.
Buck entered. Denton immediately asked, "How's Hector? Was the operation successful?"
Buck nodded. "It was. He's still unconscious, though. The doctor says his right hand will have reduced flexibility."
Pamela Hale, Hector's mother, spoke up. "Dad, I heard someone from the Doherty family mention a cursed object at home. An antique, they said, responsible for our family's string of misfortunes. I dismissed the car accident as a conspiracy theory, pure nonsense. But nowโฆwith the recent car accidents, fires, even your strokeโyou were always so healthyโand now Hector, almost killed when a suicidal kid fell on himโฆI'm starting to believe there's something to it."
They knew Denton's stubbornness. He'd always dismissed their concerns, threatening them into silence. But now, with her child nearly losing his life, she feared for the rest of the family.
Vera, the only one from her immediate family presentโher parents were hospitalizedโwrung her hands, listening to her uncles and aunts. Cursed objectsโฆ
After Hector's accident, Vera consulted someone from the Doherty family, a granddaughter of Frank's. Learning about the family's cursed dress, she began to believe in the possibility of a cursed object in their own home, perhaps one of her own antique purchases.
Denton frowned, but his expression softened. Pamela's words, along with his children's concerns and the sheer number of accidents, seemed to have finally convinced him. After a moment's reflection, he took a deep breath. "Get a diviner to examine the house," he said. He couldn't afford to be ridiculed by Alexander.
