Chapter 876
The Specters had never encountered anyone like Joe and Skylar. Their words seemed inconsequential; a simple command from either was a death sentence. The power imbalance resembled that between royalty and peasantry; they were suffocated by their helplessness. Joe and Skylar were unlike their former acquaintances. Previously, arguments were settled by endurance; whoever lasted longest "won."
The head of security, after approaching, delivered forceful instructions: โYouโve disrupted the peace of our patients. We just heard you threatening other patients and their families. Youโre a threat to our hospitalโs safety. Leave now, or weโll call the police immediately.โ
Jimmy and Keith, intimidated by the guards, fell silent, shrinking further after Joe's arrival. They looked to Valencia for guidance.
Valencia, pale, stammered, โYouโve misunderstood. Sheโs my daughter. We want her discharged.โ She added a weak, โPlease.โ Helplessness washed over her as she sneered at Wendy, โDid you think theyโd help you? Donโt forget who raised you. If you knew what was best, youโd come with us now.โ
They planned to demand a substantial sum, securing their family's financial future. What was wrong with that? What good would justice do? The boys had slept with her; why choose justice over money? It was absurd!
Valenciaโs eyes blazed, warning Wendy of the consequences of disobedience.
Wendy, pale with terror, nearly fainted. Yet, a voice urged her toward justice. Those devils deserved legal punishment; they had destroyed her. She wouldnโt let them get away with it; otherwise, what was the point of living? She'd become a mere zombie, going through the motions.
Taking a deep breath, Wendy summoned her courage: โIโm not leaving.โ
โYou!โ Valencia fumed. Without witnesses, she would have beaten Wendy into obedience.
The head of security ordered, โCall the police.โ
Valenciaโs expression shifted: โWait! Weโre leaving now!โ
Before leaving, Jimmy and Keith glared at Wendy, viewing her as an enemy rather than family; they would have preferred a dog.
After their departure, Wendy fainted.
Simona, terrified, cried, โSkylar! Wendy fainted!โ
โIโll get a doctor,โ Skylar started, but Joe stopped her. โStay here. Iโll find one.โ
Their eyes met, the distance between them seemingly vanishing.
โAlright.โ
Chapter 876
Wendyโs condition was worse than Simonaโs; in addition to bruises, she was covered in burns, a horrific sight that even the nurse found disturbing. The nurse informed Skylar, โSheโs probably been beaten repeatedly. There are fresh wounds over old ones. Sheโs even had a broken rib, and sheโs malnourished. I suspect human trafficking. Those people were likely not her biological family.โ Biological parents wouldn't treat a child like that.
Simona, exhausted from crying, fell asleep in a nearby bed. Skylar, glancing at the sleeping girl, thanked the nurse.
