Chapter 898

“Is Aiken the reason you wanted a divorce?” Joe’s voice was frigid. If it had been anyone else, he might have let her go. But of all men, it had to be Aiken. He wasn't suitable for Skylar. Yet, the thought of Skylar with someone else made him uneasy.

Skylar hadn't anticipated that a simple dinner would spark such a misunderstanding. When Joe had misunderstood her last time, she'd been perfectly clear. Would he only divorce her if she were at fault?

She clenched her jaw. "Joe, if you want a divorce, just say so. I've never clung to you. There's no need to blame me for things I haven't done!" Yesterday, he'd spoken of having a baby with her. Now, in the blink of an eye, he'd accused her of something unfounded. Men were utterly unreliable!

Joe slammed on the brakes, startling the car behind them. The driver honked angrily. Skylar was displeased.

Joe pulled over. A tense silence followed.

"When did I say I wanted a divorce?" Joe asked, his tone calmer.

Skylar paused. He'd never mentioned divorce. He'd said she wanted one. Had they misunderstood each other?

"I thought you wanted a divorce," Skylar concluded.

He didn't love her. Their relationship continued because of Gloria and a fortunate coincidence. Without that coincidence, they wouldn't have even slept together. Clearly, Joe didn't love her. Skylar believed their pretend marriage was ending because of Vera's return.

Joe paused. The tension eased. He smiled. "I've never considered divorcing you."

"Aiken and I are just friends," Skylar explained.

They looked at each other. Their earlier behavior seemed childish. It was all a misunderstanding.

"Let's get dinner. I'm still hungry," Joe said cheerfully, starting the car.

"Fondue," Skylar agreed, also hungry. She couldn't eat at the restaurant; everything tasted bland and rubbery.

The next morning, they slept late. After fondue, Joe made love to Skylar in the shower, then twice more in the bedroom, only stopping because it was already one o'clock.

Skylar was exhausted by Joe's stamina; her legs felt like jelly when she woke. Joe prepared a simple breakfast of sandwiches and coffee. Afterwards, he wouldn't let her drive, sending Lucas to take her to work. As Skylar entered the Gardner Group, Joe called Paul.
