Chapter 904
Jenny and Rowan kissed so passionately they didn't notice Skylar and Joe. Skylar quickly averted her gaze, realizing what she was witnessing. She then noticed Minerva in a nearby car, observing the scene. Though Skylar hadn't clearly seen Minerva's face earlier, her intuition confirmed her identity. Minerva watched coldly, then started her car and drove away.
"Let's go too," Skylar said to Joe.
"Okay," he replied.
Rowan and Jenny remained locked in their passionate embrace as Skylar and Joe drove away. Across the street, Christopher watched their departure. He'd rushed to the mall after a call from Vera, following them to this upscale Wiscadian restaurantโa place requiring reservations days in advance. Joe certainly knew how to woo a woman.
Step by step, Joe had won Skylar overโlavish gifts, the image of a powerful CEOโeverything women dream of. Vera had mentioned Skylar's recent success: twenty million dollars earned from their family.
Twenty million dollarsโฆ Christopher narrowed his eyes. He'd never imagined making money so easily. His own ill-gotten gains had nearly vanished, and the thought of poverty was unbearable. Skylar should have been his, ever since high school. He had to win her backโand her money, naturally.
"Skylar, I'm the only one who truly cares for you. Joe is just playing with you. He and Vera are alike," he vowed, his eyes gleaming with determination. He was set on reclaiming everything lost a year ago. With the Ruell family's backing, Joe's threats held no weight.
On their way back, Skylar and Joe stopped at Pearlhall Residence. Gloria had invited George and Alexander. Alexander immediately praised Skylar to Gloria: "Skye is the most talented person I've met in years. No wonder Viola chose herโshe's exceptional. Her restoration skills surpass even mine. I envy you having her as your granddaughter-in-law."
"Indeed," George added warmly, smiling. Both men looked at Skylar with admiration, seeing a younger Viola. Viola had been a brilliant star whose presence dimmed everyone else's. Many admired her, but none dared confess their feelings; she'd declared she would never marry, believing it would harm her partner.
Years had flown by, yet memories of their youth felt recent. Gloria beamed with pride. "You're right to be envious. I knew from the moment I met Skylar she was meant for the Martin family."
Skylar blushed under their praise. Joe leaned in, whispering with a chuckle, "I'm just glad I married you first." His voice was low, audible only to them.
Skylar, surprised by his playful response, whispered back, "That means you have good taste."
Gloria watched their exchange with a happy smile.
