Chapter 940
โAre you hungry? Paul brought us breakfast,โ Skylar said. Her heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. In the bottomless depths of his eyes, Skylar felt she might drown.
Joe hummed in response. Having slept, heโd regained some strength. He pushed himself upright with one hand. Skylar unpacked their breakfast. Paul, as always, had planned everything perfectly; their breakfasts were in separate boxes, tailored to their preferences.
They ate in silence. Afterward, workers from Pearlhall Residence arrived to help Skylar clean the room.
When the doctor examined Joe, he monitored his recovery and instructed Skylar on his care. She carefully noted his advice. Joe smiled at her occasionally.
The stabbing had frustrated him, but Skylarโs care eased his anger. Even the hospitals he detested seemed bearable now.
โAre you bored? Should I turn on the television?โ Skylar asked. Foreign emotions flickered in Joeโs eyes, and Skylar feared the abyss within them. She considered buying him digital books, but doubted heโd enjoy them.
โNo need. Iโll work,โ Joe said, placing his phone on the tableโa phone stand Paul had thoughtfully provided. His laptop sat beside him, and he worked efficiently. Skylar read quietly nearby, attending to his needsโwater, bathroom breaksโas required. The day passed uneventfully.
That evening, Ernest and his companions arrived for dinner. Compared to their careless demeanor the previous night, they appeared pale and panicked. Ernest, older and more composed, was nonetheless furious.
โJoe, was it you? Do you not consider us family? Have you forgotten your grandfatherโs words? You bear the weight of the Martin family! We are family, and this is how you treat us? Your unclesโ company projects failed yesterday. Was it your doing?โ Ernest accused.
Spencer anxiously asked, โIsnโt this excessive?โ
Joe had struck them where it hurt. They had built their companies by exploiting the Martin Group, leeching off its wealth, forgetting that their businesses wouldn't have survived in Jipsburg without Joeโs unwavering support.
