Chapter 949

When Skylar arrived home, the Pearlhall Residence helpers had just departed. Gloria, forbidding Skylar from cooking, had ensured the helpers prepared a meal for their return, given Skylar's daytime work and nighttime caregiving responsibilities for Joe. She retrieved the dishes, then helped herself to some pasta. Joe joined her at the table.

Skylar, settling into his seat, reassured her, "I won't divorce you for Vera. Don't listen to Molly; she's trying to create discord." He remained perplexed by his own actions and genuine-sounding pronouncements regarding Vera.

Before bed, Minerva messaged Skylar, inquiring about her availability. Wednesday being a busy weekday, Skylar responded, "I'm free on Saturday." Minerva replied, "Alright, I'll confirm the time and location on Friday." "Okay, see you Saturday," Skylar concluded.

On Saturday, Skylar went to the restaurant Minerva had reserved. A renowned establishment specializing in homemade dishes and requiring reservations, Skylar had discovered it online. Minerva arrived ten minutes early. Upon Skylar's arrival, Minerva presented the menu, saying, "I've ordered some specialtiesโ€”they're marked. Feel free to add more; the portions are small. Order anything that appeals to you." Skylar surveyed the pre-selected dishesโ€”all the house specialtiesโ€”and added two desserts.

The dishes arrived in succession. Minerva then explained, "Ms. Sullivan, I've heard about you. I've wanted to visit Mr. Gardner Senior, but my schedule prevented it. I'm not beating around the bush; I've invited you to lunch because I believe my home isโ€ฆ disturbed. I need your help."

Their conversation was direct and efficient, a refreshing lack of pointless pleasantries. Minerva continued, "For a month, I've been waking in terror. It feels like someone's watching, sometimes even a weight on my back, as if someone's pressing down. It worsens at night. Relatives consulted divination masters who dismissed it as delusion."

Minerva detailed her experiences honestly. Skylar inquired, "Do you keep antiques?"

"Some," Minerva replied. "Gifts from elders, and auction purchases. I don't know much about them; they're just part of a small collection," adding that most were intended as gifts for her elders.

"If you're willing," Skylar offered, "I can examine your house."

Minerva's face brightened. "That's wonderful! Could we go straight after lunch? It's only a ten-minute drive."

"No problem," Skylar agreed, having no afternoon engagements.

As the server presented a plate of fresh steamed fish, Minerva felt a sudden wave of nausea, turning to retch.
