Chapter 95
Gloria picked Skylar up from work. In the car, Gloria explained that George had bought many things: stationery, antiques, books, old paintings, porcelain, emerald ware, and more.
“If you don’t recognize something, just leave it,” Gloria said. “But let George know if anything is counterfeit. He’s rich, but he can’t be blamed for being deceived. Don't worry about upsetting him by telling him about counterfeits.”
Skylar smiled. “Okay, I got it.”
George’s house was a vintage-style residence with a pavilion and attic, located in a rural area. Entering, Skylar felt she’d arrived at a scenic spot.
George smiled. “Stay tonight. I have a hot spring you can enjoy.”
It had been over a year since Gloria’s last visit. Seeing the renovations, she asked, “When did you build the hot spring?”
“The water source was always there,” George replied casually. “I decided on a hot spring recently, so I had one built.”
Gloria wasn’t interested. “I just left the hospital, and my heart isn’t strong. I shouldn’t use the hot spring. Your house is like a resort! The air is fresh. Let’s go see your treasures.”
“Okay,” George said, leading the way.
Skylar followed, enjoying the breathtaking scenery. She remembered college Saturdays spent in rural areas with classmates. Passing George’s house, some had thought it a tourist spot, even asking about tickets before being told it was a private residence. Their shock at this revelation, and their marveling at the house’s luxury, mirrored Skylar’s own feelings. No wonder Gloria had said not to worry George about counterfeits.
“Our family owns a nearby resort with a hot spring,” Gloria said. “I called Joe when I picked you up. You two can stay there tonight.” (Gloria was subtly creating opportunities for Skylar and Joe.) She knew Skylar was pretty and figured a fitted swimsuit would captivate the usually cold Joe.
George interjected, “Tell Joe to come here. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him. I want to talk.”
Gloria rolled her eyes. “They’re a couple. Why interfere?”
Despite Gloria’s scolding, George chuckled. Their long-standing friendship was evident.
“My grandchildren are returning from abroad soon,” George suggested. “When they’re back, we should all get together for my 70th birthday.”
Gloria nodded. “Alright.”
As they chatted, they reached a three-story building.
“I store everything there,” George said to Skylar. “After waking up tomorrow, take a look. The more I see these antiques, the more I like them.”
Seeing the three-story storage building, Skylar was amazed. It was like a mini-museum.
