Skylar texted Natalie to confirm her safe arrival. The airport was far from the hotel, but the driver ensured a smooth journey, and Skylar soon fell asleep. In her drowsiness, she felt Joe cover her with his jacket and pull her close for comfort. Initially, she hesitated to disturb his work, but exhaustion and his comforting presence lulled her into a deep sleep in his arms.
Joe's low, even voice continued, the mundane work details somehow lulling her further. After what seemed like a long time, the car stopped. She vaguely heard Paul say, "Should we wake Mrs. Martin? We're near the hotel."
Joe replied, "Not yet."
Skylar opened her eyes. "Are we almost at the hotel?"
"Yes, nearly there," Joe said gently.
Skylar sat up, gazing at the unfamiliar architecture. A wave of excitement washed over her. The nap had rejuvenated her, and she felt energized.
"Would you like a stroll?" Joe asked, noticing her bright eyes and enthusiasm.
Skylar nodded eagerly. "Will you be busy after we check in?"
"Not really. After we grab a bite, we can head out," Joe replied.
Paul quickly glanced back, thinking, "Not busy? Far from the truth." Joe was perpetually busy. Howard's comments hinted at a special fondness for Skylar—a feeling Joe might not even recognize. Earlier, during the drive, Joe had held her close and spoken softly to avoid waking her.
Joe shot Paul a cold look. Paul quickly averted his gaze, unwilling to mention Joe's workload to Skylar.
In minutes, they reached the hotel. After checking in, Paul ordered room service. Following their meal, Skylar changed, and Joe took her for a walk.
The streets were quiet; their stroll was short and leisurely, born of simple curiosity. As they walked, Skylar noticed their intertwined hands, their fingers locked together. Her heart quickened.
Unaware of her gaze, Joe assumed she was interested in a nearby shop. "Let's check it out," he said.
