Chapter 78: How Sensible You Are
The man hesitated. โBut you have to promise me that youโll plead for me before Princess Aveline and Lord Garraway, and spare my life.โ
โDonโt worry. Youโve done a good job providing evidence. Youโll be exempted from death,โ Isolde said excitedly.
โAlright, Iโll give you all the letters. If you donโt do what you promised, my friends will take revenge,โ the person threatened. โIf we werenโt wanted by the authorities and had nowhere to go, I wouldnโt have returned.โ
Miltonโs expression changed drastically. Although Wolf Mountain was exterminated, those captured were not the leaders. During this time, the Royal Court had issued an arrest warrant. Milton had worried someone would be caught, but after so long, there was no news. He thought he had escaped, but hadnโt expected them to be forced to flee to Argentum.
From the shadows, Milton saw the man give Isolde the letters, then quickly leave. Killing intent immediately surged within Milton. Since there was no one around, it would be easy to kill Isolde. He could even take back the letters and cease worrying once and for all.
Isolde hid the letters and walked out. However, Milton suddenly appeared in the forest. Isolde looked shocked and stumbled back, a stiff, flustered smile on her face. โWhy are you here?โ
Milton no longer looked honest. His expression was frighteningly sinister, and killing intent filled his eyes. He approached and said in a low voice, โHand them over!โ
Isolde continued to retreat, becoming increasingly anxious. โWhat are you talking about? Hand what over?โ
โHand them over!โ Milton continued to approach.
Isolde smiled awkwardly. She hid one hand behind her back while the other rested on her whip. โI donโt know what youโre talking about.โ
Milton knew he couldnโt prolong this. The forest appeared empty, but there was no guarantee someone wouldnโt arrive later. He said sternly, โSince you want to die, Iโll send you on your way.โ
He raised his hand and attacked. Isolde flipped backward and quickly dodged. When she landed, she looked a little disheveled. She leaned against a tree for support and said, โSo what Timothy Brown said is true? You are indeed the mastermind. Youโre the one who ordered people to capture Lord Theodric and me?โ
โDonโt talk nonsense!โ Milton suddenly stood still and stared at Isolde. Then, he backed off. He reverted to his original appearance, and a faint smile appeared on his face. He said, โI saw you hiding here with a man and was afraid something would happen to you, so I specially came to take a look. Since youโre fine, Iโm relieved.โ
He looked around and continued to retreat slowly. Thoughts flashed through Isoldeโs mind. If she hadnโt experienced her previous lifeโฆ
However, she managed to calm herself. She heaved a deep sigh of relief and hurriedly fled. โThanks,โ she muttered. She ran very fast, as if running for her life.
Milton no longer had any doubts when he saw Isolde fleeing. His figure flashed, and he blocked Isoldeโs path. He punched Isoldeโs chest and laughed sinisterly. โItโs not good to know too much.โ
In a panic, Isolde raised her whip. Although the whip wrapped around Miltonโs wrist, the punch landed on her. With powerful force, Isolde fell to the forest floor. She spat out a mouthful of blood.
As Milton approached, Isolde moved backward. Her face was filled with fear. โIf you want the letters, Iโll give them to you. I wonโt tell anyone that you colluded with the thugs of Wolf Mountain. I wonโt say youโre related to Shadowmereโs case. Let me go, please.โ
Miltonโs expression was dark and murderous. โDead men donโt talk.โ
Isolde quickly took out the letters from her pocket and waved them in front of Milton. โIโll give them to you. Also, Iโll give you all the properties I have and my motherโs assets. Just let me go.โ
Milton said viciously, โDo you think I care?โ
His figure loomed over Isolde, exuding immense intimidation. In the dappled light of the forest, his face appeared even more sinister.
โYou donโt care?โ Isolde retreated in a panic. โIโll also tell you Dougโs secret and why he went to Shadowmere.โ
Milton stopped. A cunning light flashed in his eyes. โWhat secrets? Tell me. If theyโre really secrets, Iโll let you off.โ
Isolde let out a sigh of relief, shifting her body backward. Blood still trickled from her lips, making her look both battered and anxious. She said, โDoug went south this time to Shadowmere. Heโs investigating your collusion with the authorities there. He already has evidenceโDavid Nelson, the Lieutenant Governor of Shadowmere, has confessed to your dealings with him.โ
โNonsense!โ Milton was furious, but a dark suspicion rose in his heart. He hadnโt indeed heard from David for a long time.
Isolde added, โItโs true. David really confessed. The only reason he hasnโt been arrested is because Doug is working with him. In any case, Doug wants the credit. Theyโve already set a trapโall thatโs left is for you to walk right into it.โ
โWhat trap?โ Milton believed Isolde. If Doug went to Shadowmere, he would definitely find somethingโDavid was extremely cunning. Perhaps David would really push the blame onto him to get away with it.
โDavid will join forces with a few generals to accuse you of killing Ethan Bennett of Shadowmere. Theyโll say youโre the mastermind in the Shadowmere case,โ Isolde said.
Milton was furious. โHow dare he distort the truth? David was clearly the one who killed Ethan. How dare he! I trusted the wrong guy. Heโs the mastermind!โ
His expression changed, and he said sternly, โGive me the letters!โ
Isolde supported herself against the tree and stood up. She handed the letters over shakily and said, โI wonโt tell anyone about you colluding with the thugs of Wolf Mountain to capture Lord Theodric and me. Donโt worry.โ
Milton snatched the letters and laughed sinisterly. โOf course I wonโt worry. Thatโs because youโll be dead!โ
He pulled out a dagger and stabbed at Isoldeโs chest. โGo to hell!โ
A figure quickly descended from above and kicked the dagger out of his hand before landing gracefully. Milton was shocked. When he took a closer look, he realized it was Oliver of Southern Watch.
Isolde had already straightened. There was no trace of panic on her face, only a mocking smile. โMarshal Blackwell, youโve been tricked. Thanks for telling us who killed Ethan and that David is the mastermind.โ
Miltonโs hands trembled. He looked at the letters in his hand, wanting to see if they were the real ones.
Oliver smiled coldly. โThereโs no need to look. That guy is not Wolf Mountainโs second-in-command. I just found someone to pretend to be him to lure you into the trap.โ
Milton sighed deeply. Looking at Oliver, tears actually welled up in his eyes. โIโve let the King down. Ever since I did wrong, I havenโt been able to feel at ease. Now that youโve found me, Iโm relieved. Iโm willing to testify against the mastermind and confess the people involved to atone for my sins.โ
Oliver remarked indifferently, โHow sensible you are.โ
