Chapter 78: How Sensible You Are

The man hesitated. โ€œBut you have to promise me that youโ€™ll plead for me before Princess Aveline and Lord Garraway, and spare my life.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Youโ€™ve done a good job providing evidence. Youโ€™ll be exempted from death,โ€ Isolde said excitedly.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll give you all the letters. If you donโ€™t do what you promised, my friends will take revenge,โ€ the person threatened. โ€œIf we werenโ€™t wanted by the authorities and had nowhere to go, I wouldnโ€™t have returned.โ€

Miltonโ€™s expression changed drastically. Although Wolf Mountain was exterminated, those captured were not the leaders. During this time, the Royal Court had issued an arrest warrant. Milton had worried someone would be caught, but after so long, there was no news. He thought he had escaped, but hadnโ€™t expected them to be forced to flee to Argentum.

From the shadows, Milton saw the man give Isolde the letters, then quickly leave. Killing intent immediately surged within Milton. Since there was no one around, it would be easy to kill Isolde. He could even take back the letters and cease worrying once and for all.

Isolde hid the letters and walked out. However, Milton suddenly appeared in the forest. Isolde looked shocked and stumbled back, a stiff, flustered smile on her face. โ€œWhy are you here?โ€

Milton no longer looked honest. His expression was frighteningly sinister, and killing intent filled his eyes. He approached and said in a low voice, โ€œHand them over!โ€

Isolde continued to retreat, becoming increasingly anxious. โ€œWhat are you talking about? Hand what over?โ€

โ€œHand them over!โ€ Milton continued to approach.

Isolde smiled awkwardly. She hid one hand behind her back while the other rested on her whip. โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

Milton knew he couldnโ€™t prolong this. The forest appeared empty, but there was no guarantee someone wouldnโ€™t arrive later. He said sternly, โ€œSince you want to die, Iโ€™ll send you on your way.โ€

He raised his hand and attacked. Isolde flipped backward and quickly dodged. When she landed, she looked a little disheveled. She leaned against a tree for support and said, โ€œSo what Timothy Brown said is true? You are indeed the mastermind. Youโ€™re the one who ordered people to capture Lord Theodric and me?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t talk nonsense!โ€ Milton suddenly stood still and stared at Isolde. Then, he backed off. He reverted to his original appearance, and a faint smile appeared on his face. He said, โ€œI saw you hiding here with a man and was afraid something would happen to you, so I specially came to take a look. Since youโ€™re fine, Iโ€™m relieved.โ€

He looked around and continued to retreat slowly. Thoughts flashed through Isoldeโ€™s mind. If she hadnโ€™t experienced her previous lifeโ€ฆ

However, she managed to calm herself. She heaved a deep sigh of relief and hurriedly fled. โ€œThanks,โ€ she muttered. She ran very fast, as if running for her life.

Milton no longer had any doubts when he saw Isolde fleeing. His figure flashed, and he blocked Isoldeโ€™s path. He punched Isoldeโ€™s chest and laughed sinisterly. โ€œItโ€™s not good to know too much.โ€

In a panic, Isolde raised her whip. Although the whip wrapped around Miltonโ€™s wrist, the punch landed on her. With powerful force, Isolde fell to the forest floor. She spat out a mouthful of blood.

As Milton approached, Isolde moved backward. Her face was filled with fear. โ€œIf you want the letters, Iโ€™ll give them to you. I wonโ€™t tell anyone that you colluded with the thugs of Wolf Mountain. I wonโ€™t say youโ€™re related to Shadowmereโ€™s case. Let me go, please.โ€

Miltonโ€™s expression was dark and murderous. โ€œDead men donโ€™t talk.โ€

Isolde quickly took out the letters from her pocket and waved them in front of Milton. โ€œIโ€™ll give them to you. Also, Iโ€™ll give you all the properties I have and my motherโ€™s assets. Just let me go.โ€

Milton said viciously, โ€œDo you think I care?โ€

His figure loomed over Isolde, exuding immense intimidation. In the dappled light of the forest, his face appeared even more sinister.

โ€œYou donโ€™t care?โ€ Isolde retreated in a panic. โ€œIโ€™ll also tell you Dougโ€™s secret and why he went to Shadowmere.โ€

Milton stopped. A cunning light flashed in his eyes. โ€œWhat secrets? Tell me. If theyโ€™re really secrets, Iโ€™ll let you off.โ€

Isolde let out a sigh of relief, shifting her body backward. Blood still trickled from her lips, making her look both battered and anxious. She said, โ€œDoug went south this time to Shadowmere. Heโ€™s investigating your collusion with the authorities there. He already has evidenceโ€”David Nelson, the Lieutenant Governor of Shadowmere, has confessed to your dealings with him.โ€

โ€œNonsense!โ€ Milton was furious, but a dark suspicion rose in his heart. He hadnโ€™t indeed heard from David for a long time.

Isolde added, โ€œItโ€™s true. David really confessed. The only reason he hasnโ€™t been arrested is because Doug is working with him. In any case, Doug wants the credit. Theyโ€™ve already set a trapโ€”all thatโ€™s left is for you to walk right into it.โ€

โ€œWhat trap?โ€ Milton believed Isolde. If Doug went to Shadowmere, he would definitely find somethingโ€”David was extremely cunning. Perhaps David would really push the blame onto him to get away with it.

โ€œDavid will join forces with a few generals to accuse you of killing Ethan Bennett of Shadowmere. Theyโ€™ll say youโ€™re the mastermind in the Shadowmere case,โ€ Isolde said.

Milton was furious. โ€œHow dare he distort the truth? David was clearly the one who killed Ethan. How dare he! I trusted the wrong guy. Heโ€™s the mastermind!โ€

His expression changed, and he said sternly, โ€œGive me the letters!โ€

Isolde supported herself against the tree and stood up. She handed the letters over shakily and said, โ€œI wonโ€™t tell anyone about you colluding with the thugs of Wolf Mountain to capture Lord Theodric and me. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

Milton snatched the letters and laughed sinisterly. โ€œOf course I wonโ€™t worry. Thatโ€™s because youโ€™ll be dead!โ€

He pulled out a dagger and stabbed at Isoldeโ€™s chest. โ€œGo to hell!โ€

A figure quickly descended from above and kicked the dagger out of his hand before landing gracefully. Milton was shocked. When he took a closer look, he realized it was Oliver of Southern Watch.

Isolde had already straightened. There was no trace of panic on her face, only a mocking smile. โ€œMarshal Blackwell, youโ€™ve been tricked. Thanks for telling us who killed Ethan and that David is the mastermind.โ€

Miltonโ€™s hands trembled. He looked at the letters in his hand, wanting to see if they were the real ones.

Oliver smiled coldly. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to look. That guy is not Wolf Mountainโ€™s second-in-command. I just found someone to pretend to be him to lure you into the trap.โ€

Milton sighed deeply. Looking at Oliver, tears actually welled up in his eyes. โ€œIโ€™ve let the King down. Ever since I did wrong, I havenโ€™t been able to feel at ease. Now that youโ€™ve found me, Iโ€™m relieved. Iโ€™m willing to testify against the mastermind and confess the people involved to atone for my sins.โ€

Oliver remarked indifferently, โ€œHow sensible you are.โ€
