Chapter 80: He Didn’t Know

A complicated look filled Oliver’s eyes as he asked, “Can this poison be cured?”

“I don’t know yet,” Sadie replied.

Oliver looked at Isolde in a daze and said, “I’ll wait outside. Call for me if something comes up.”

“Thanks,” Isolde said softly.

Chapter 81: Treacherous Truths

After Helena and Oliver left, Isolde sat up slightly. “Your ladyship, if you have anything to say, just say it. I can take the blow.”

Sadie adjusted her posture, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the bed. She looked remarkably unrestrained, unlike a typical young lady from a highborn family.

“You are sixteen years old this year. Even if your fighting training extends your life, it will only last for two to three years at most. If you want to live, there is only one way: marry,” Sadie said.

“Marry?”

“Sinistrum can be cured if you sleep with a man. Although it’s the worst method, it’s a good way to temporarily save your life. For now, I’m afraid you won’t live past twenty-five.”

“Alright, I get it. Thanks, your ladyship. I’ll treat you to coffee another day,” Isolde said, calming down after a moment’s thought. A few more years meant time for revenge; she felt relieved.

Sadie looked at Isolde. “You don’t seem worried at all.”

Isolde smiled. “What’s there to worry about? Everyone must die eventually. I should have died when I was young. My time now is a gain. God even blessed me with a teacher who has cared for me for many years.”

Isolde had indeed gained much time. She had already died once. Now, she was back to take revenge and even knew when she would die. God was truly good to her.

A look of admiration appeared in Sadie’s eyes. “It’s good that you think that way.” She stood up. “I’ll give you a prescription for your internal injuries. There’s nothing I can do about your poison.”

Isolde suddenly grew serious. “Your ladyship, shouldn’t you tell me who asked you to treat my injuries? Or rather, who asked you to tell me I was poisoned?”

Sadie looked at Isolde in surprise. “What do you mean?”

Isolde straightened her face, the wisdom in her eyes gradually revealing itself. “Your ladyship, you’re not a busybody. You know medicine, but you rarely treat people. Now that I’m in the limelight, with your personality, why would you approach me? Unless someone instructed you to tell me that I’ve been poisoned.”

Sadie sat down and stared at Isolde. “You’re very smart. It seems my mother didn’t judge you wrongly. That’s right, someone told me to come.”

“Who is it?” Isolde’s eyes flashed.

“The Marchioness of Greystone?” Isolde was stunned. She hadn’t expected it to be Rosemary. In her previous life or this one, Isolde had never interacted with Rosemary; she had only seen her a few times from afar. How did she know I was poisoned?

Sadie explained, “Your mother, Lady Prunella, and my mother knew each other from long ago. When your mother died in childbirth, my mother and the Queen Mother were not around and couldn’t rush back in time. However, Mother had always suspected the cause of your mother’s death because your mother came from a military family and had been trained in fighting since she was young. She had always been in good health. How could she have died in childbirth? Mother investigated and found that your mother showed signs of poisoning before she gave birth, but she couldn’t confirm her guess. Unless she found Sinistrum in you, she couldn’t confirm her suspicion.”

Isolde was silent for a moment. “Even healthy people can have difficult labor. Did your mother make any other discoveries? Otherwise, she wouldn’t have made such a guess.”

“I don’t know about that,” Sadie said.

Isolde knew Sadie was lying; Sadie knew, but was unwilling to tell her.

“Does your mother suspect who the murderer is?” Isolde probed again.

Sadie shook her head. “No.” Then, she looked at Isolde with a clear gaze. “You should know very well who poisoned your mother.”

With that, Sadie wrote a prescription and left.

After that, Princess Aveline came over to ask how Isolde was doing.

“Your injuries are very serious. I shouldn’t have let you take the risk,” Princess Aveline said guiltily, stuffing a soft pillow behind Isolde’s back.

“It’s alright. I’m fine,” Isolde said with a steady smile. “Moreover, things went unexpectedly smoothly. Milton attacked me and also named David.”

Princess Aveline shook her head. “Actually, we don’t have much evidence. We speculated about David because of information given by the concubine of the butler at the Duke’s estate, but there’s no concrete evidence. If Milton turns against us, it will be more troublesome.”

Isolde said, “At the very least, we can drag Milton down first.”

Princess Aveline nodded. “Yes, at least David’s right-hand man was arrested. Isolde, your plan is brilliant. If we can uproot them all completely, you’ll have achieved a great feat. Also, that concubine’s testimony is crucial. If you hadn’t detained her, we wouldn’t have suspected David. We wouldn’t have been able to trap Milton like that, either.”

David was the Lieutenant Governor of Shadowmere. During the reign of the previous king, David was only a Deputy Governor. In twenty years, he became the Lieutenant Governor and had control over a huge territory. David’s daughter, Jacinda Nelson, was a concubine of the king.

Isolde knew this was very risky because Milton had always been cunning. If she wanted him to believe her lies, she needed to target his weaknesses. Milton was not at all afraid that people would find out that he was related to the Shadowmere case because of Jacinda and David.

Milton was only worried that Wolf Mountain’s matter would be exposed. Therefore, when he saw Wolf Mountain’s second-in-command enter the forest alone, he chased after her at all costs to kill her.

After entering the forest, he also suspected it was a trap, so he wanted to retreat once, too.

Princess Aveline arranged for Oliver to send Isolde back to the Duke’s estate.

After settling Isolde in her room, Oliver sat down and looked at her. “Did Lady Sadie say if there’s a cure for your poison?”

Isolde smiled and said, “Lady Sadie said it’s nothing. She has already given me a prescription. After taking it for about three months, I’ll be mostly cured.”

“Really?” Oliver had been uneasy ever since he found out that Isolde had been poisoned.

Oliver knew that Sadie’s medical skills were brilliant, but he had never heard of Sinistrum. Moreover, when he was in the room, he had heard Sadie’s words and felt that Sinistrum was very serious.

“It’s true. Ask Lady Sadie if you don’t believe me!” Isolde smiled mischievously.

Oliver saw that her smile was relaxed, so he thought she should be fine. Moreover, even if it was serious, it wasn’t something he should worry about.

After settling Isolde, Oliver left her rooms. At the entrance, he met Geoffrey.

Oliver greeted, “My lord.”

Geoffrey looked at Oliver expressionlessly. “Great Marshal, it’s been a very long night for you.”

“It’s nothing,” Oliver said coolly. “I’ll bid you goodbye now.”

Geoffrey looked up and asked darkly, “Southern Watch and the Inspector High Court of Parliament worked together on this case. Did you arrange the trap at the Princess’s estate today?”

“Sort of,” Oliver said. He didn’t say it was Isolde who suggested it.

“But I don’t know,” Geoffrey said coldly.
