Chapter 80: He Didnโt Know
A complicated look filled Oliverโs eyes as he asked, โCan this poison be cured?โ
โI donโt know yet,โ Sadie replied.
Oliver looked at Isolde in a daze and said, โIโll wait outside. Call for me if something comes up.โ
โThanks,โ Isolde said softly.
Chapter 81: Treacherous Truths
After Helena and Oliver left, Isolde sat up slightly. โYour ladyship, if you have anything to say, just say it. I can take the blow.โ
Sadie adjusted her posture, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the bed. She looked remarkably unrestrained, unlike a typical young lady from a highborn family.
โYou are sixteen years old this year. Even if your fighting training extends your life, it will only last for two to three years at most. If you want to live, there is only one way: marry,โ Sadie said.
โMarry?โ
โSinistrum can be cured if you sleep with a man. Although itโs the worst method, itโs a good way to temporarily save your life. For now, Iโm afraid you wonโt live past twenty-five.โ
โAlright, I get it. Thanks, your ladyship. Iโll treat you to coffee another day,โ Isolde said, calming down after a momentโs thought. A few more years meant time for revenge; she felt relieved.
Sadie looked at Isolde. โYou donโt seem worried at all.โ
Isolde smiled. โWhatโs there to worry about? Everyone must die eventually. I should have died when I was young. My time now is a gain. God even blessed me with a teacher who has cared for me for many years.โ
Isolde had indeed gained much time. She had already died once. Now, she was back to take revenge and even knew when she would die. God was truly good to her.
A look of admiration appeared in Sadieโs eyes. โItโs good that you think that way.โ She stood up. โIโll give you a prescription for your internal injuries. Thereโs nothing I can do about your poison.โ
Isolde suddenly grew serious. โYour ladyship, shouldnโt you tell me who asked you to treat my injuries? Or rather, who asked you to tell me I was poisoned?โ
Sadie looked at Isolde in surprise. โWhat do you mean?โ
Isolde straightened her face, the wisdom in her eyes gradually revealing itself. โYour ladyship, youโre not a busybody. You know medicine, but you rarely treat people. Now that Iโm in the limelight, with your personality, why would you approach me? Unless someone instructed you to tell me that Iโve been poisoned.โ
Sadie sat down and stared at Isolde. โYouโre very smart. It seems my mother didnโt judge you wrongly. Thatโs right, someone told me to come.โ
โWho is it?โ Isoldeโs eyes flashed.
โMy mother!โ
Chapter 80: He Didnโt Know (Continued)
โThe Marchioness of Greystone?โ Isolde was stunned. She hadnโt expected it to be Rosemary. In her previous life or this one, Isolde had never interacted with Rosemary; she had only seen her a few times from afar. How did she know I was poisoned?
Sadie explained, โYour mother, Lady Prunella, and my mother knew each other from long ago. When your mother died in childbirth, my mother and the Queen Mother were not around and couldnโt rush back in time. However, Mother had always suspected the cause of your motherโs death because your mother came from a military family and had been trained in fighting since she was young. She had always been in good health. How could she have died in childbirth? Mother investigated and found that your mother showed signs of poisoning before she gave birth, but she couldnโt confirm her guess. Unless she found Sinistrum in you, she couldnโt confirm her suspicion.โ
Isolde was silent for a moment. โEven healthy people can have difficult labor. Did your mother make any other discoveries? Otherwise, she wouldnโt have made such a guess.โ
โI donโt know about that,โ Sadie said.
Isolde knew Sadie was lying; Sadie knew, but was unwilling to tell her.
โDoes your mother suspect who the murderer is?โ Isolde probed again.
Sadie shook her head. โNo.โ Then, she looked at Isolde with a clear gaze. โYou should know very well who poisoned your mother.โ
With that, Sadie wrote a prescription and left.
After that, Princess Aveline came over to ask how Isolde was doing.
โYour injuries are very serious. I shouldnโt have let you take the risk,โ Princess Aveline said guiltily, stuffing a soft pillow behind Isoldeโs back.
โItโs alright. Iโm fine,โ Isolde said with a steady smile. โMoreover, things went unexpectedly smoothly. Milton attacked me and also named David.โ
Princess Aveline shook her head. โActually, we donโt have much evidence. We speculated about David because of information given by the concubine of the butler at the Dukeโs estate, but thereโs no concrete evidence. If Milton turns against us, it will be more troublesome.โ
Isolde said, โAt the very least, we can drag Milton down first.โ
Princess Aveline nodded. โYes, at least Davidโs right-hand man was arrested. Isolde, your plan is brilliant. If we can uproot them all completely, youโll have achieved a great feat. Also, that concubineโs testimony is crucial. If you hadnโt detained her, we wouldnโt have suspected David. We wouldnโt have been able to trap Milton like that, either.โ
David was the Lieutenant Governor of Shadowmere. During the reign of the previous king, David was only a Deputy Governor. In twenty years, he became the Lieutenant Governor and had control over a huge territory. Davidโs daughter, Jacinda Nelson, was a concubine of the king.
Isolde knew this was very risky because Milton had always been cunning. If she wanted him to believe her lies, she needed to target his weaknesses. Milton was not at all afraid that people would find out that he was related to the Shadowmere case because of Jacinda and David.
Chapter 00: He Didnโt Know (Continued)
Milton was only worried that Wolf Mountainโs matter would be exposed. Therefore, when he saw Wolf Mountainโs second-in-command enter the forest alone, he chased after her at all costs to kill her.
After entering the forest, he also suspected it was a trap, so he wanted to retreat once, too.
Princess Aveline arranged for Oliver to send Isolde back to the Dukeโs estate.
After settling Isolde in her room, Oliver sat down and looked at her. โDid Lady Sadie say if thereโs a cure for your poison?โ
Isolde smiled and said, โLady Sadie said itโs nothing. She has already given me a prescription. After taking it for about three months, Iโll be mostly cured.โ
โReally?โ Oliver had been uneasy ever since he found out that Isolde had been poisoned.
Oliver knew that Sadieโs medical skills were brilliant, but he had never heard of Sinistrum. Moreover, when he was in the room, he had heard Sadieโs words and felt that Sinistrum was very serious.
โItโs true. Ask Lady Sadie if you donโt believe me!โ Isolde smiled mischievously.
Oliver saw that her smile was relaxed, so he thought she should be fine. Moreover, even if it was serious, it wasnโt something he should worry about.
After settling Isolde, Oliver left her rooms. At the entrance, he met Geoffrey.
Oliver greeted, โMy lord.โ
Geoffrey looked at Oliver expressionlessly. โGreat Marshal, itโs been a very long night for you.โ
โItโs nothing,โ Oliver said coolly. โIโll bid you goodbye now.โ
Geoffrey looked up and asked darkly, โSouthern Watch and the Inspector High Court of Parliament worked together on this case. Did you arrange the trap at the Princessโs estate today?โ
โSort of,โ Oliver said. He didnโt say it was Isolde who suggested it.
โBut I donโt know,โ Geoffrey said coldly.
