Chapter 803
But they were a step too late.
Hawley had already seized Rosetta, holding the dagger to her as he backed her against a wall.
โDonโt come any closer, or Iโll kill her!โ he screamed, his voice filled with menace as he saw people rushing toward him.
In the chaos, his wig fell off. Baillie, still doubled over in pain, finally recognized him. โIt really is you!โ he spat, his voice laced with fury. โHawleyโฆ The Windsor family has no quarrel with you! Why are you doing this? What did you put in the tea? Tell me!โ
Hawley let out a sinister laugh, one hand tightening around Rosettaโs neck. Rosetta, terrified, trembled violently, her face ashen.
โBaillie, save meโฆ Please, save me!โ Rosetta pleaded, her voice shaking as she begged her son for help.
But Baillie was in too much pain to save himself, let alone anyone else.
Ivy rushed over, her face paling at the horrifying scene.
โHawley, what did you put in the tea?โ she demanded, her heart aching with a mix of grief and rage as she looked at the chaos engulfing the chapel. โEven if you hate the Windsors, the others are innocent!โ
โInnocent? You rich people are all scum! Especially you Windsors!โ Hawleyโs face was flushed with agitation as he shouted his accusations, the knife in his hand waving menacingly at the crowd. โYou adopted Marjory not to give her a warm home, but because you listened to some charlatan who told you she could be a scapegoat! Well, you got your wish. She died young!โ
Ivy stared at him, completely bewildered. โMarjory? Whoโs Marjory?โ
She suspected Hawley had the wrong target.
โThe one you all called Emma Windsor!โ he roared back. โHer name wasnโt Emma, and she wasnโt a Windsor!โ
The pieces clicked into place for Ivy. Adkins had been the one to handle the adoption. By the time Emma joined the family, her name had already been changed. Ivy had never known her original name.
โIf you hadnโt adopted her, she wouldnโt have died so young!โ Hawley screamed. โYou took her in but treated her horribly. You killed her, and Iโm here for revenge!โ
Sensing an opportunity, Ivy pressed him. โSo you were the one who set fire to Windsor Manor!โ
โThatโs right! I burned it down! I caused Baillieโs car accident, too! And even before that, when your carโs brakes failed, that was me! I told Marjory to leave the Windsor family, but she wouldnโt listenโฆ If she had, she wouldnโt have lost her life!โ
Before he could finish, Baillieโs wife, Flora, who had been standing beside him, gasped. Her face contorted with fury as she shoved her husband away. โWhat did he just say? The car accident was deliberate? That means my babyโฆ someone murdered my child?โ
Cold sweat beaded on Baillieโs forehead, his face a sickly shade of gray. โFlora, Iโฆ I just found out about this myself, we-โ
โHeโs lying!โ Hawley shouted. โHe knew all along but didnโt have the guts to tell you! Youโre blind, too! With all your money, you could have had anyone, but you chose these demons! The only thing they care about is profit, not family!โ
As vile as Hawley was, Ivy had to admit he wasnโt wrong.
Upon hearing the truth, Floraโs face hardened. She swung her hand and slapped Baillie so hard his head snapped to the side.
โBaillie, weโre done! I want a divorce!โ With that, she turned her back on the entire mess and stormed out.
โHawley! Youโve gone too far!โ The lead plainclothes officer arrived, his voice booming with authority as he drew his service pistol. โArson, murderโฆ do you have any respect for the law? Iโm ordering you to drop your weapon and release the hostage! Do it now, or Iโll shoot!โ
The tension in the room stretched to its breaking point. Just then, the first ambulance arrived and began transporting the most critical patients.
Jamison seized the opportunity to rush to Ivyโs side. โIvy, get back. The police are here now. Theyโll handle this.โ
She turned to him, her eyes filled with concern. โAre you okay? Did you drink any of the tea?โ
โNo.โ
Jamison thought back. While he had been talking with the other guests, he had seen a staff member pouring tea for people in the reception area. He seemed to recall a cup being placed next to Ivy as well.
โDid you drink any?โ His face tightened with sudden fear.
โNo. I was just about to pick it up when you came back and sat down,โ Ivy replied. As she replayed the moment in her mind, a cold sweat broke out on her back. They had been inches away from suffering the same fate as the others. Thankfully, they hadnโt.
Seeing Ivy standing there unharmed, Hawleyโs face twisted with frustration. โYou two are lucky,โ he sneered. โI was planning to send all you Windsors to hell at your fatherโs funeral, but I didnโt expectโฆโ
BANG!
Before Hawley could finish, the officer fired a warning shot into the ceiling. โHawley, stop wasting time! Release the hostage now!โ
Police sidearms were typically loaded with a couple of blanks for warning shots. Even if one hit a suspect, it likely wouldnโt be fatal. But the sound was deafeningly effective. Everyone in the room flinched, and Hawleyโs face paled with panic.
