Chapter 804
His plan had been flawless.
From the moment he learned of Adkinsโs funeral, he had been meticulously plotting his revenge. Heโd laced the tea with a significant dose of mercury โ colorless, odorless, and difficult to detect. He had expected to take down everyone in the room, Ivy included.
But she hadnโt touched the tea. She was completely unharmed.
The thought infuriated him. โFine! You want me to let her go? Then send that woman over here!โ he snarled, pointing the dagger at Ivy.
He knew Emma had despised Ivy. Killing her would be the ultimate revenge.
All eyes shifted to Ivy, who was standing beside Jamison.
โNot a chance!โ Jamison instinctively pulled Ivy behind him, his eyes blazing with a fierce, protective light. โYouโre not getting out of here today. If you keep resisting, it wonโt end well for you.โ
โHahโฆ you think I expect a happy ending?โ Hawley laughed, a crazed edge to his voice. โIโve already come this far. Itโs just one worthless life. Iโm an orphan. Dead, aliveโฆ whatโs the difference? My only regret is Marjory. You people killed her. Ivy killed her. All of you rich bastards killed her!โ
Every word out of Hawleyโs mouth dripped with a deep-seated hatred for the wealthy, a resentment that had clearly festered for years. It was no wonder he had resorted to such extreme measures.
โHurry up! Ivy, sheโs your mother! Are you really going to let her die?โ Hawley threatened again when Ivy didnโt move.
But as he spoke, the officer advanced, his gun still raised. โHawley, Iโm giving you one last chance to surrender. Release the hostage and put your hands on your head!โ
โStay back! Or Iโll kill her! I swear I will!โ Hawley shrieked, realizing Ivy had no intention of trading places with Rosetta. He broke into a fit of manic laughter. โYou Windsors really are heartless. Even a mother and daughterโฆ so coldโฆโ
โFine! Theyโre all Windsors anyway. Iโll take one with me!โ With that, he lunged, plunging the dagger toward Rosettaโs chest.
In that split second, the lead officer didnโt hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
BANG!
Hawleyโs body jolted, his arm going limp as the dagger flew from his grasp. Rosetta screamed and collapsed to the floor, covering her head.
Undeterred, Hawley scrambled to retrieve the weapon. The officer fired a second shot, and then three more officers swarmed him, swiftly and efficiently pinning him to the ground.
Crimson blood stained the white chrysanthemums at the front of the chapel, adding a grotesque touch of gore to the funereal atmosphere.
The gunshots left Ivyโs ears ringing. She instinctively covered them as Jamison pulled her into a protective embrace, shielding her from the bloody scene.

More ambulances continued to arrive, whisking away the poisoned guests. Hawley, with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and thigh, was now the most critical patient. The officers loaded him into a waiting ambulance and sped toward the hospital.
The chapel was still in chaos, but the immediate threat was gone.
Baillie was on the floor, curled up and moaning in agony, clutching his stomach. Jamison glanced at him. Though he considered him an enemy, his duty as a doctor came first. He walked over and began administering first aid.
Ivy looked at Rosetta, who was still frozen on the stage. After a momentโs hesitation, she walked over.
โAre you all right? Theyโve taken him away,โ she said softly.
Rosettaโs head snapped up. Her eyes, filled with a crazed fury, locked onto Ivy. She lunged forward, her hands flailing wildly. โIvy! This is all your fault! All of it! If you hadnโt killed Emma, Hawley never would have come for revenge! None of this would have happened! And your fatherโฆ he was fine! Youโre the one who stressed him out, you made him sick! Why donโt you just die? Why donโt you just die!โ
Ivy flinched, a bitter smile twisting her lips. How foolish she had been.
She stood up, turned, and walked away without another word.
Ambulances from several more hospitals arrived, and the remaining guests, including Baillie, were taken away. Rosetta, worried about her son, went with them.
In the end, only Ivy and Jamison remained in the desecrated chapel.
Ivy walked to the memorial portrait and looked at the character for โcondolences,โ now spattered with blood. After a long silence, she spoke, her voice laced with self-deprecating irony. โI never thought Iโd be the one to see you off in the end.โ
Jamison said nothing, simply standing beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder, giving it a firm, reassuring squeeze.
Ivy found a staff member from the funeral home and asked about the remaining procedures. After the farewell ceremony, the body would be cremated and then interred.
โAre you sure you want to do this?โ Jamison asked.
โYes. The rest of the familyโฆ I doubt theyโll have time for this anytime soon.โ It was better to let the deceased rest in peace as quickly as possible.
But she wondered if Adkins, knowing that his own funeral had become the stage for such a horrific mass tragedy, would be able to rest in peace at all.
The memorial service ended in chaos. After Adkinsโs body was cremated, Ivy chose an exceptionally expensive urn for him. His business had failed, his mansion had been burned to the ground by an enemy โ at least in death, he could reside in luxury. It was a kind of closure, she supposed.
