โIf the Windsors donโt care whether someone lives or dies, why are you so worried?โ
โThatโs exactly why I have to worry,โ Micah shot back. โIvyโs already sick โ what if something else happens to her?โ The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became, mumbling to himself, โNo, I have to find her. Dead or alive, there needs to be some news.โ
โHold it!โ Jamison barked, stopping him in his tracks.
โCome on, Uncle, my momโs got you looking after her. Iโm just โโ
Micahโs face scrunched up, thinking Jamison wouldnโt let him leave, but before he could finish, Jamison cut him off: โIvyโs fine. You donโt need to go looking.โ
โWhat?โ Micahโs eyes widened in shock. โUncle, how do you know that?โ
โShe was in a car accident a few days ago. I happened to be at the hospital when they brought her in.โ
โA car accident? Why didnโt you tell me?โ Micahโs voice shot up, full of indignation. Jamisonโs face was icy, his gaze sharp. โWhy should I? What does she have to do with you?โ
โShe โ sheโs Emmaโs sister. That makes her family, doesnโt it?โ Micah stammered, grasping for excuses to justify his concern.
Jamison looked at his nephew, exasperation simmering. โMicah, I know exactly whatโs going on in that head of yours. Donโt make me knock some sense into you.โ With that, Jamison turned and headed into the exam room to check on his sister.
Left standing in the hallway, Micah paced anxiously before pulling out his phone to call Ivy again. Still no answer.
After a while, Jamison reemerged, his tone firm. โGo inside and stay with your mother. Stop worrying about things that arenโt your business.โ He didnโt even glance at Micah as he strode away.
โUncle, wait!โ Micah hurried after him, face twisted with worry. โUmโฆ How bad are Ivyโs injuries? Is she seriously hurt?โ
โItโs pretty serious.โ
โIs she still in the hospital? Which department?โ
Jamison paused, turning to fix his nephew with a glare that was beyond severe.
Micah quickly added, โIโm not asking for myself. The Windsors are looking for her โ her friends even showed up at the house today.โ
Jamisonโs brow quirked, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. โShe has friends?โ
โShe does! Katrina โ you probably donโt know herโฆ Anyway, the Windsors are trying to find her, and now we finally have some news.โ
Jamison stayed silent, but inwardly, he couldnโt help a cold, ironic smile. He remembered Ivyโs friend was indeed named Katrina. They were always together. Interesting.
โUncle, you still havenโt told me where is Ivy-โ
โShe didnโt stay at the hospital. They stitched her up, and she left the same day.โ Jamison turned on his heel and strode off, not even slowing down.
Micah trailed behind, refusing to give up. โShe left? But you said she was seriously hurt! Where did she go? If she didnโt go home to recover, and now no one can reach her, something must have happened!โ
Jamison listened to his nephewโs worried rambling, already aware that Ivy was still at Golden Maple Estate and hadnโt returned to the Windsor house. Yet sheโd sent her friend to go looking for her there, making a show of her disappearance.
What game is she playing now?
But Jamison was never one to gossip โ or to play the hero. He replied blandly, โIf she doesnโt want to go back to the Windsors, Iโm sure she has her reasons. Youโre more anxious about her than her own family โ still want to claim she means nothing to you?โ
โNo, I just โโ
Jamison suddenly spun around, his face taut with authority. โMicah, Iโm warning you one last time โ if youโre going to marry Emma, then do it properly. Stop getting involved in other peopleโs business. Ivyโs life has nothing to do with you. Sheโs an adult, not a helpless child. She can go wherever she wants. What difference does it make if she goes back to the Windsors? Would anyone there actually care for her? Or are you planning to play caretaker every day? Right in front of Emma?โ
His words hit like a slap, leaving Micah frozen in place, speechless.
Jamison shot him a final glare. โGo take care of your mother.โ Then he walked away.
Katrina returned to Golden Maple Estate, filling Ivy in on what had happened that morning as she stirred a pot of soup on the stove.
โIvy, I think youโre right. Thereโs a ninety-nine percent chance Emma was behind the brake failure.โ She turned, frowning, and looked at her friend leaning in the doorway. โBut sheโs pregnant, and she doesnโt know the first thing about cars. How could she pull that off? Did she pay someone?โ
Ivy nodded. โItโs not impossible. Back when she arranged for me to be kidnapped, she didnโt do it herself either.โ
Emma had always been ruthless, and theyโd all underestimated her before.
Katrinaโs anger simmered. โSheโs absolutely cold-blooded โ determined to get rid of you.โ
First, Emma had orchestrated a kidnapping, and Ivy had barely survived. Now sheโd bribed someone to sabotage the brakes. Katrinaโs voice trembled with fury. โIf weโd been even a little less lucky that day, we could have been killed โ or worse, taken others with us in a crash. The consequences donโt bear thinking about. Thank God you kept your head and handled it โ otherwise, we wouldnโt be here right now.โ
Ivy, in contrast, was calm. โGuess fateโs not done with me yet,โ she said, her lips curling into a wry smile. โSince I managed to survive, Iโd better make the most of it.โ
Katrina glanced back. โSo what are you planning to do?โ
โHer birthdayโs in a few days,โ Ivy replied, her smile sharpening. โIโm going to give her a present sheโll never forget.โ
