Katrina leaned in, her curiosity plain. โSo, what exactlyโs the plan? Need me to help?โ
โOf course I do. Letโs talk it over properly at dinner.โ
Ivy felt nothing but utter disappointment in her family. Sheโd given up on them completely and had no intention of ever going back. But before she could cut ties for good, she needed to get proof of all the ways Emma had tried to frame her โ lay bare that womanโs scheming, malicious side for everyone to see.
Just then, her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen, her expression turning impatient.
โWho is it?โ Katrina asked.
โMicah,โ Ivy replied flatly. โEver since you went to the Windsor estate, heโs found out Iโm missing. Heโs called a dozen times.โ
Katrina snorted, rolling her eyes. โSeriously, what is up with him? He and Emma seem practically glued together these days, and sheโs pregnant with his kid. Their wedding dateโs already set โ so whyโs he still hung up on you?โ
Ivy couldnโt figure it out either. Maybe thatโs just how some men are โ never satisfied, always chasing after something new, never really letting go. Pathetic, really.
She was about to silence her phone again when a thought struck her. Changing her mind, she answered.
โHello?โ
โIvy! Thank God, you finally picked up!โ Micahโs voice was frantic, almost incoherent. โIโIโve called so many timesโฆ No one answered, I thoughtโI thought something had happened to you.โ
Ivy kept her tone cool. โWhat do you want?โ
โWhere are you, Ivy? Did you really get in a car accident?โ
โWho told you that? Was it Emma?โ
โNo, it was my uncle. My mom wasnโt feeling well, so I brought her to the hospital and ran into him there.โ
Really? A cold prickle ran down Ivyโs spine. She worried Jamison might have let something slip, maybe even told them where she was staying. โAnd what else did your uncle say?โ
โHe just mentioned youโd been hurt in a car accident, but refused to stay in the hospital.โ
โThatโs all?โ
โThatโs it.โ Micah sounded puzzled. โIvy, are you hiding something from us?โ
Ivy had no interest in dragging the conversation out. The only reason sheโd picked up was to ask Micah for Jamisonโs number. Since heโd brought him up, she went with it. โMy situation has nothing to do with you. Just send me your uncleโs phone number.โ
โWhy do you want his number?โ
โHe helped me out after the accident. I havenโt had the chance to thank him yet.โ
โOh. Well โ are you hurt badly? Howโs your recovery? Where are you? Let me come see you.โ
Now Micah was trying his best to sound loving and sincere, as if heโd forgotten how heโd screamed at Ivy just days ago, after sheโd doused him with a fire extinguisher. But Ivy was far from fooled. Her voice stayed icy. โThatโs not necessary. Just send me your uncleโs number.โ
There was a pause. โIvy, are you mad at us?โ Micah asked, sounding pitiful.
Ivy blinked, baffled. โMad at you? Why would I be?โ
โBecause Iโm marrying Emma. Because sheโs pregnant with my child. Youโre angry, so even after the accident, you refuse to come home.โ
Seriously? Ivy couldnโt even muster a response โ she just rolled her eyes hard, at a loss for words. How could anyone be so self-absorbed, so delusional?
โMicah, you canโt seriously think Iโm still in love with you, can you?โ she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
โYouโre not?โ he sounded wounded.
โWhatโs there to love? Your fickleness? Your spinelessness? Or your colossal ego?โ
โIvy, I-โ Micahโs voice broke, wounded and angry. โAfter everything, I still worry about you. When you disappeared, I was so scared, so concerned-โ
Ivy couldnโt help but laugh, the sound dry and dismissive. Missing for three days, and only now he notices. And he calls that โcaringโ?
Little did Ivy know: Micahโs daily trips to the Windsor estate werenโt only about Emma.
