Chapter 241
The nurse knew exactly who Iris was: a famous doctor from abroad, personally hired by the hospital director. Even though she was upset, the nurse didnโt dare say a word. With Irisโs connections, no matter how bad her temper was, none of them could afford to complain or talk back. The nurse slunk away awkwardly.
Iris cast a resentful glance toward the operating room. She would really have it too easy. I'm willing to give up. This was her best chance. If she missed it, Calvin and Sienna...
As she turned around, Iris noticed someone sitting at the nurseโs station. The person looked vaguely familiar. For a moment, Iris couldnโt quite remember who it was. It dawned on her; this was Josefโs younger brother, Jacob, the one Leo had said was mentally ill. โWhatโs he doing here?โ she wondered.
Leo had told Iris that Jacob had lost his mind ten years ago. Jacob couldnโt take care of himself, always acting crazy and clueless, and was prone to violent outbursts. But now he actually looked like a normal person.
โWhatโs going on here?โ Iris walked over to the nurse and asked.
โDr. Grant, this patient accidentally cut his arm. Iโm just bandaging it up,โ the nurse replied.
A sly smirk tugged at Irisโs lips. โWell, look at that. Another easy mark just handed to me on a silver platter,โ she wondered. โNo way Iโm letting him walk out of here in one piece,โ she thought darkly.
Iris cleared her throat twice and put on a serious face. โOh, I see. A cut like that isnโt something to take lightly. It might even be infected. My advice is to get a shot and then have it stitched up. Come to my office, and Iโll give you a full examination.โ
Jacob frowned. Itโs just a scratch, nothing that needs surgery or a check-up. If Josef hadnโt made such a fuss, the wound would be gone in an hour, he thought.
โNo thanks, itโs just a scratch from a tree branch,โ Jacob replied flatly.
Irisโs face instantly turned cold, her voice sharp and unfriendly as she snapped, โWhatโs that supposed to mean? Iโm the doctor here. If you come to the hospital, you should listen to the doctorโs advice. Now get into the operating room with me so I can check you again. I try to help, and you just throw it back in my face. People like youโalways pinching pennies, scared to spend a dime.โ
The nurse stepped forward and said softly, โDr. Grant, but this patient just has a regular scratch, Iโve alreadyโฆโ
Before she could finish, Iris turned and dumped all her pent-up anger straight onto the nurse.
Iris snapped, โWhat do you know? Youโre just a nurse! Whoโs the doctor here, me or you? Since when does a little nurse like you get toโDo you even know who I am? Or are you just begging to get fired? One word from me and youโre out of here.โ She leaned in, eyes full of disdain. โOh, youโre still an intern? No wonder you have zero sense. You actually dare to offend your superiors! Do you even want to fulfill your internship? Get out of my sight, you worthless thing!โ
Jacob was an idiot. This woman was obviously just here to stir up trouble.
โMiss Big Shot Doctor, are you deaf or just pretending? I said I donโt need you to treat me. I donโt care what kind of boss you think you are. I get to decide what happens to my body,โ he shot back, his tone wry.
Irisโs eyes widened in shock. She whipped around to glare at Jacob. She hadnโt expected even Jacob, the so-called lunatic, to be this hard to deal with.
โA nutcase is a nutcase. The whole Bayer family is out of their minds,โ she fumed inwardly.
โHey, donโt cry. Here, use this to wipe your tears,โ Jacob said, handing the nurse a handkerchief. Sheโd just been chewed out for no reason and could only sniffle helplessly, tears slipping down her cheeks.
โThank you,โ she whispered.
Jacob shook his head.
โWait a second, you look kind of familiar. Arenโt you a mental patient?โ Iris narrowed her eyes at Jacob.
