Yvonne left Rowena’s room with her face dark as thunder.
Elton flashed a sly grin. “Hey, Rowena, is Mom punishing you again?”
Rowena scooped him up and plopped him onto the bed. “How did you figure that out, Elton?”
Elton lifted his chin, full of confidence. “I’m six now, Rowena. I’m pretty awesome, you know.”
“You sure are, Elton,” Rowena said with a smile, ruffling his hair.
Her parents’ relationship was a mess, mostly because her mom was hopelessly obsessed. Yvonne, the adopted daughter of the Clare family, fell for the second son, also her adoptive father, Carden Clare.
But Carden already had a fiancée. Yvonne schemed her way into his heart and forced his fiancée to go abroad.
Carden was a real powerhouse, basically running the Clare family as the second-in-command. Having grown up there, she knew exactly how to keep Carden under her thumb.
They got married, but when Rowena was alive, Carden’s true love came back from abroad. Without a second thought, Carden ditched Yvonne and left with his lover. Ever since then, he had been trying everything to get a divorce.
But Yvonne just wouldn’t let go. She even convinced the Clare family to pressure Carden, saying the family needed an heir.
Seven years ago, they forced Carden into having a child with Yvonne through in vitro fertilization, and that was how Elton was born.
Still, Carden refused to come back. He gave up everything and lived overseas with that woman.
Even though Yvonne tried to use her status as his wife to pressure Carden, it was useless, because that woman was already married abroad, and she and Carden were just friends on paper.
The woman married Carden’s best friend, and now Carden moved in under the guise of being just a friend. But in reality, it was just Carden and his lover living together.
They kept up this act to keep Yvonne from stirring up trouble.
Yvonne knew full well the woman’s child was Carden’s, but there was nothing she could do. After all, the woman was legally married.
Sometimes, even Rowena couldn’t figure out what Yvonne was still holding onto. Carden hadn’t come back in over ten years, and honestly, Rowena had stopped feeling anything for him a long time ago.
Carden’s other daughter was actually a few months older than Rowena. The two had been together even before Carden and Yvonne got married.
It was almost laughable. Those two were engaged from the start, so it was only natural for them to be together.
Yet Yvonne always insisted the woman was the mistress, never realizing that she was the one who barged in and stole Carden with shady tricks.
As soon as Kress walked in, he was met with that look of disdain and aloofness from Winifred.
But the moment Sienna walked in, Winifred’s whole demeanor changed. Her smile was suddenly as warm as spring sunshine, and Kress almost cursed.
“Hi, Sienna, you’re back,” Winifred beamed, hurrying over to help Sienna out of her coat.
“Yeah. Winifred, Kress wanted to see you, so I brought him along. He said he already talked to you yesterday,” Sienna said.
Winifred shot Kress a quick, dismissive look. Kress didn’t look the slightest bit embarrassed; he just coughed twice, totally unfazed.
“Birds of a feather flock together, you know. Sienna, Winifred’s got the most talent I’ve ever seen, and her style is almost a mirror of mine. It’s perfect, isn’t it?” Kress said with a grin.
“Birds of a feather flock together? Dream on, Kress. You really love talking yourself up.” Just then, a mocking voice rang out from behind.
