Chapter 4

After a long bout of crying, I developed a fever upon returning home. Fever-reducing medicine proved ineffective, and I awoke with an even worse fever. Weakness consumed me; I felt utterly drained. I rarely fell ill, but this time, recovery seemed impossible. Gritting my teeth, I hastily changed clothes and prepared to go to the hospital. Moments later, my boss, having just granted me leave by phone, unexpectedly appeared.

He raised an eyebrow, questioning my solitude. "My boyfriend was busy," I replied.

Zayden Mercer gave me a knowing look. "So busy he couldn't even care for his sick girlfriend? His attitude towards women leaves much to be desired."

Though accustomed to his sharp tongue, his words still stung. Zayden, my boss and senior, was two years my elder—the most ambitious second-generation rich person I'd ever encountered. Before graduating college, he'd founded a studio with some senior colleagues, securing investment from his parents. That small studio had blossomed into a fairly successful company.

"The boss is always right," I said. "Is there something you need?"

"Ahem," I began nervously, "there's been a slight… accident."

He glanced at me. "Your proposal from last week was leaked. Pinnacle Group's new proposal boasts a 10% lower budget. There's a mole in the company, and I'll find them. The new plan falls to you."

Astonishment washed over me. "Mr. Mercer, I'm sick! You've come all this way to exploit my labor!"

He touched his nose. "Don't worry. Rest, and deliver the new plan within three days."

A wave of dizziness swept over me. Three days?! A month's workload compressed into three?! Unconscionable boss! Unethical businessman! I quit!

"I didn't—" He began, then continued, "—double the bonus, for the entire team, plus a personal subsidy from me."

I couldn't possibly not complete the task. "Mr. Mercer, you can rest assured!"

He requested a disposable cup from the nurse, filled it with hot water, and handed it to me. "Rest well today, then get back to work."

"I'll exceed your expectations, boss! And don't forget the overtime pay!"

My comment about returning to work immediately darkened Zayden's expression, and he abruptly left.
