Listen to this chapter:

Done with his words, Hansel also left. After already being scolded by her husband and now blamed by her son, Evelyn almost exploded with anger.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with both of you? How can you both blame me? Everything I did was for you! None of you understand my intentions! Go ahead, leaveโ€”just leave! Donโ€™t ever come back again! My husband yells at me, and my son is ungrateful! Now Iโ€™ve lost my grandchild, too. How many lifetimes of bad luck did I need to end up with such a mess?โ€

After venting, Evelyn collapsed onto the couch, exhausted. But the matter at hand still needed to be resolved. She took a deep breath and ordered the butler to find Lucyโ€™s contact details. Soon, she received a phone number. Evelyn drew in a deep breath and dialed.

โ€œHello? Who is this?โ€ Lucy sounded irritated, still frustrated that after posting so many videos, there wasnโ€™t any significant response.

โ€œMrs. York, this is Evelyn Stewart,โ€ Evelyn introduced herself.

Lucyโ€™s eyes lit up. In that instant, all her annoyance and anxiety vanished. โ€œOhhh,โ€ Lucy dragged out the syllable, putting on airs. โ€œItโ€™s you. What do you want?โ€ Well, she thought, maybe the videos worked after all! It seemed the impact was paying off.

โ€œLetโ€™s talk,โ€ Evelyn cut straight to the point.

Lucy exchanged a glance with her son. โ€œTalk about what? What could we possibly have to discuss?โ€

Evelynโ€™s patience snapped. โ€œStop pretending! Youโ€™ve stirred up all this trouble just to get money, havenโ€™t you?โ€

Lucyโ€™s eyes gleamed with cunning. โ€œOh, you mustnโ€™t say such things! Iโ€™m only here to seek justice for my daughter. How did that become about money in your version of events?โ€

โ€œHa, you hypocrite,โ€ Evelyn sneered.

Lucy gritted her teeth. โ€œI suggest you speak to me with a little more respect. Youโ€™re the one begging me now, so get your priorities straight!โ€

โ€œNo need for all the nonsense. Just say how much you want. Think of it as charity. My family donates quite a bit every year; one more contribution wonโ€™t make a difference.โ€

Charity? Donation? Lucy laughed in disbelief. Initially, she had planned to name her price, but Evelynโ€™s condescending, patronizing tone was infuriating. She changed her mind suddenly. โ€œDonโ€™t be so hasty. Werenโ€™t you the one who tried to run us over with your car just a few days ago? You look down on us, but now youโ€™re calling me first, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Lucyโ€™s goal was to get money and compensation, but before that, she wanted to humiliate Evelyn and vent her anger.

Evelyn cursed silently, calling her ungrateful. She wanted to hang up right then, but Richardโ€™s warning echoed in her mind. She took a deep breath, determined to get this over with as quickly as possible. โ€œWhy waste time with this? Just name your price!โ€

Lucy sensed the impatience and disdain in Evelynโ€™s tone but deliberately refused to state a number. โ€œWhatโ€™s the rush? Shouldnโ€™t you start by apologizing to me?โ€

Evelyn clenched her teeth, holding back her anger. Fine, sheโ€™d endure it!

โ€œThat was entirely my driverโ€™s fault. He wasnโ€™t paying attention and didnโ€™t see you. Iโ€™ll make sure heโ€™s fired.โ€

Lucy snorted. โ€œFiring a driver doesnโ€™t change anything. Did you think that would be enough to settle this? Money alone wonโ€™t cut it.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ Evelyn snapped, losing her composure.

Lucy replied calmly, โ€œYou should at least show some sincerity, donโ€™t you think, Mrs. Johnson?โ€

A chill ran down Evelynโ€™s spine. A sense of foreboding gripped her heart.
