Listen to this chapter:

Joli asked, โ€œDid you use my name to apply for the lab access at the deanโ€™s office?โ€

Sophie replied, โ€œAh! Yes.โ€

He asked again, โ€œThen, who is using that lab? I need to contact that person.โ€

โ€œNo one is using it.โ€

โ€œNobody?โ€ Although he expected that answer, Joli still felt uneasy about it.

Sophie answered, โ€œYeah, nobody.โ€

He knew he should stop probing and accept her reply, as he had done many times before. But when he recalled Mirandaโ€™s questioning gaze, he couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œWhy did you apply when no one was going to use the lab?โ€

She raised an eyebrow and was surprised by his sudden boldness. She smiled warmly and said, โ€œJust because no oneโ€™s using it now doesnโ€™t mean it wonโ€™t be needed in the future. Access to academic resources has always been about seizing the opportunity. Do you need me to spell that out for you?โ€

Joli asked, โ€œWhat is in that lab?โ€

Sophie replied impatiently, โ€œThe CPRT measurement device, of course.โ€

He reminded her, โ€œBut we already have one in our research group.โ€

โ€œHaving two is not a bad thing,โ€ she retorted.

โ€œWe donโ€™t need two devices, but other groups might find itโ€”โ€

โ€œJoli!โ€ Sophie interrupted him. โ€œDo you have nothing to do today? Have you finished your work in the lab?โ€

Joli was taken aback and replied, โ€œNot yet.โ€

Her expression turned serious. โ€œSince you havenโ€™t, get back to what youโ€™re supposed to do. You donโ€™t need to worry about anything else. You might be a genius with an impressive academic record, but donโ€™t forget whoโ€™s giving you these resources and opportunities.โ€

Joli pursed his lips, and his expression stiffened.

Sophie eyed him coldly until he lowered his gaze and returned to his usual obedient self. โ€œDr. Xander, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

A warm smile returned to her face again. โ€œRelax. I might seem strict, but donโ€™t let that get to you. Just focus on your research and studies, and youโ€™ll see the results in time.โ€

Joli had heard this countless times before. Throughout his three years in graduate school, he had never slacked off.

Sophie added, โ€œWeโ€™ll keep the lab under your name for now, and talk about it later when we want to use it. Anything else you want to discuss?โ€

He shook his head. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œOkay. You can head back now.โ€

โ€œSure, Dr. Xander.โ€

โ€œHey, wait.โ€ Sophie suddenly stopped Joli. โ€œI get that youโ€™re busy in the lab, but you need to focus on Yasmineโ€™s thesis and try to finish it by this month.โ€

He frowned. โ€œDidnโ€™t I give it to you six months ago?โ€

Yasmine heard that and said, โ€œYouโ€™re aware that was six months ago, huh? By now, I should have a new output result. Otherwise, what will others think of me?โ€

Joli stayed silent.

Sophie shot Yasmine a look to keep quiet. Then, she stood and walked toward him.

She patted his shoulder and smiled. โ€œI know youโ€™ve got your own research to focus on, plus youโ€™re juggling Yasmineโ€™s thesis. I know Iโ€™m asking too much of you, and I feel bad about it.

"I talked to your parents yesterday. I heard about the recent heavy rains, and the orchard your father manages was affected. Just when they were expecting to make a profit, the weather ruined everything and all their months of hard work went down the drain."

She sighed as if she genuinely felt their pain. "I wish I could do more to help, but being so far away doesnโ€™t make it easy. I secretly transferred fifty thousand dollars to your parentsโ€™ account. While itโ€™s not a lot, it should help them get through this tough time.โ€
