Listen to this chapter:

Joli lowered his eyes to mask his emotion, but his fists clenched tighter beneath his sleeves. After what felt like ages, he finally relaxed his grip as if he had run out of energy and decided to give in.

โ€œThank you, Dr. Xander. I appreciate everything youโ€™ve done for me over the years,โ€ he said.

โ€œOf course! What else would I do for my best student? Donโ€™t you think you deserve special treatment?โ€ Sophie replied.

He didnโ€™t respond. After all, he wasnโ€™t good with words, and most of his classmates and teachers saw him as a quiet and reserved person.

โ€œAlright, you can leave now. Take your time with the thesis, and you donโ€™t have to finish it by this month. Manage your time as you see fit, but I trust you wonโ€™t let me down.โ€

Joli turned and left.

Sophie sat down and slowly sipped her coffee.

Yasmine approached her with a grin. โ€œAunt Sophie, youโ€™ve really had a way of getting him to listen.โ€

Miranda and the others couldnโ€™t apply for a lab, and Joli refused to withdraw his application. As a result, they needed to come up with an alternative solution.

Madison was so upset that she skipped dinner, which was unusual for someone who loved food. โ€œThis is ridiculous! Itโ€™s so unfair. Arenโ€™t the faculty going to do anything about this?โ€

Sebastian replied, โ€œThe faculty always favors those who achieve good academic results. Besides, Joli's followed all the proper procedures for his lab access application, so what can they do about it? What grounds do they have to intervene?โ€

She sighed and rested her chin on her chubby hands. โ€œHow are we supposed to continue our research without a lab?โ€

He replied, โ€œThere are a lot of unoccupied labs, but those labs donโ€™t have the CPRT measurement device.โ€

If they could get the device, any lab would work.

Madison asked casually, โ€œIs that device expensive?โ€

Miranda was taken aback by the question.

After a brief pause, Sebastian replied sarcastically, โ€œWell, thatโ€™s certainly aโ€ฆ good question.โ€

He immediately pulled out his phone and did a quick search. โ€œThe best CPRT measurement device on the market is the Everysto model from Dulcora. It also has a microscope but costs 1.26 million dollars.โ€

โ€œ1.26 millionโ€ฆโ€ Madison thought momentarily before suggesting, โ€œWhy donโ€™t we just buy one?โ€

Sebastian was perplexed and questioned the unexpected idea. In contrast, Miranda was surprised and thought it was a brilliant suggestion.

Seeing his confused stare, Madison asked, โ€œWhy are you looking at me like that?โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆ did I not explain it clearly enough? Fine, Iโ€™ll repeat it. This device costs 1.26 million dollars, not 126 dollars. Got it?โ€

She nodded. โ€œYes, and you donโ€™t have to repeat that.โ€

โ€œSo, do you still thinkโ€ฆ we can afford it?โ€ Sebastian asked.

โ€œNot we, but me. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ve got this.โ€ Madison smiled and patted her chest.

He wondered if she had misspoken or if something was wrong with his hearing. โ€œWhere are you getting all that money?โ€ He thought she was bragging.

โ€œI donโ€™t have it,โ€ she admitted.

Sebastianโ€™s expression clearly said, โ€œI knew you were joking.โ€

โ€œBut my dad does,โ€ Madison continued.

He was flabbergasted.

She pulled out her phone and dialed a number. โ€œHey, Dad!โ€

โ€œSweetie! Youโ€™re finally calling your old man. Iโ€™m so touched, I could cry.โ€

Madison said, โ€œDad, I need to talk to you about something.โ€

โ€œSure, whatโ€™s up?โ€

She said, โ€œWellโ€ฆ Iโ€™m short on cash lately. Could you send me some?โ€

โ€œHow much do you need?โ€

โ€œAbout a million.โ€ Madison still had 500 thousand dollars in pocket money, which would be more than enough when combined with the money her father transferred to her later.
