Listen to this chapter:

Changing the password was basic stuff.

โ€œDo you only do this with me, or with everyone?โ€ Zach asked.

โ€œOf course, not everyone. Like my mom or Mimi, I text them the new password whenever I change it. And when they come over, I wonโ€™t change it afterward. Why do you ask?โ€

โ€œThen why did you change it after I knew the password?โ€

Winter gave him a puzzled look and shot back, โ€œWho are you to me? Why wouldnโ€™t I change the password? Are we that close?โ€

โ€œWhat about other guys? If they knew the password to your houseโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOf course Iโ€™d change it immediately.โ€ Wasnโ€™t that obvious?

Zach didnโ€™t know whether to feel pleased or frustrated. On the one hand, he was glad that this woman wasnโ€™t entirely foolish. Sure, she played around with men, but she had a sense of caution around them. Winter knew she had to be on guard.

On the other hand, Zach was frustrated that he wasnโ€™t any different from the other guys in her eyes. He was also on the list of people she had to be on guard around.

Winter asked, โ€œSo, why are you looking for me?โ€

Zach glanced inside. โ€œItโ€™s really hot outside.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œCan I tell you after we go in?โ€

Winter lowered her hand and stepped aside to let him in.

Smiling, Zach entered and casually changed into indoor slippers. Then, he headed straight to the living room and plopped down on the couch. Anyone who didnโ€™t know better might have thought it was his own home.

Winter rolled her eyes. โ€œGet to the point. Iโ€™m busy.โ€

Zach snorted, โ€œBusy with what? Are you busy inviting people over to pass the boring summer days or to enjoy lazy afternoons together?โ€

โ€œWhat the hell!โ€ Winterโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œCanโ€™t you just talk normally? Why bring up my posts on social media? He even read them out loud. How awkward!โ€

Zach continued, โ€œYou were pretty smug when you posted it. So what if I read it out? Youโ€™re allowed to post on social media, but Iโ€™m not allowed to mention it?โ€

โ€œWait, are you telling me you came all the way to my place in the middle of the afternoon just to read my social media posts back to me? If youโ€™re that bored, why donโ€™t you go and watch paint dry?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m super bored. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m here to answer your call. Whereโ€™s that wine glass? Letโ€™s clink one, shall we?โ€

Winterโ€™s gaze flickered. โ€œWhat call do you mean? Youโ€™ve gone crazyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œTsk, itโ€™s that post of yours. Arenโ€™t you asking for company? So, here I am.โ€

Winter was at a loss for words. Fine, she forgot that this idiot was also an adept player. No wonder he picked up on it so quickly.

Zach smirked and said, โ€œCome on, whatโ€™s the plan? Shall we stay in the living room, or head to the bedroom?โ€

Winter heard his sarcastic tone and frowned. โ€œI do want to have fun, but not with you.โ€

Zach casually asked, โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œPersonal relationships can affect our partnership. I never get involved with men I have work ties with.โ€

โ€œBut we donโ€™t have any ties at work.โ€

Winter insisted, โ€œBut weโ€™re in a partnership right now.โ€

Zach snapped his fingers. โ€œGreat! A partnership means we should work together, right?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œYesterday, my mom asked me if we had a fight because she saw you having lunch with another guy.โ€

Winter frowned. โ€œYesterdayโ€ฆ I was at the office all day. I just had lunch with a colleague at noonโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWas it a guy?โ€

Winter nodded.

โ€œPerfect! My mom might have misunderstood the situation. So, we need to set some new ground rules to protect our partnership.โ€ Zach looked completely serious.

Winter shrugged and replied without even asking what the new rules were, โ€œFine, I decline. Our partnership ends right here.โ€

Zach was taken aback. Wait a minuteโ€ฆ Why was her reaction so unpredictable?
