Listen to this chapter:

Miranda had no idea whether it was a lot or not because Paul wasnโ€™t replying to her messages anymore. Once she was done making all the rolls, she packed ten crab rolls into a bag, planning to bring them over to Paul.

She knocked on his door for about half a minute, but there was no answer. Taking out her phone, she typed a message.

Miranda: โ€œDr. Jefferson, are you home?โ€

This time, Paul responded quickly:

Paul: โ€œIโ€™m at the lab.โ€

Miranda: โ€œI made some crab rolls and packed ten for you. Will you come get them when youโ€™re back tonight?โ€

Paul initially thought of replying with a polite decline. As he typed it out, he realized that rejecting a gift like that so coldly would be rather rude, especially since the crab rolls were homemade and she was offering them with kindness. Plus, refusing might make him seem guilty.

Paul: โ€œAlright.โ€

Miranda put her phone away and returned home. After tidying up the kitchen and just sitting down to relax with a drink, her phone rang againโ€“it was Winter.

โ€œHoney! Are my crab rolls ready yet?โ€ Winterโ€™s excited voice burst through the line.

โ€œTheyโ€™re ready, all set! I made dozens today, plenty for you to feast on, you little glutton!โ€ Miranda teased.

Winter, who had just stepped out of her office building in her high heels, was practically flying to Mirandaโ€™s house in excitement. After a week of nonstop work, her project was finally completed! She couldnโ€™t wait to get out of the office.

โ€œOh, shut up! Youโ€™re the glutton! Wait for me. Iโ€™ll be there in a flash!โ€ Winter playfully responded with a sing-song voice and a wide grin on her face.

Just as she ended the call and put her phone away, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.

โ€œZach?โ€ she said, spotting him standing nearby with his hands in his pockets, his face as dark as a thundercloud.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ Winter raised an eyebrow, walking up to him. As she got closer, his expression looked even more sour than she expected.

โ€œOh, am I in the way of your lovey-dovey conversation?โ€ Zach sneered sarcastically, imitating her playful tone, โ€œOh, shut up.โ€

Winterโ€™s mouth twitched in irritation. โ€œDid you take the wrong meds or something?โ€

โ€œMeds? Nah, Iโ€™m not as greedy as you, you big glutton,โ€ Zach shot back with mock sweetness.

Winter was speechless.

โ€œCome on, are you in a hurry? Someoneโ€™s probably waiting for you, right? Here, let me step aside,โ€ Zach taunted, pretending to make way for her. โ€œOh, and you should probably take off those heels; youโ€™d get there faster barefoot, seriously.โ€

Winter clenched her teeth, thinking, โ€œWhereโ€™s my knife when I need it?โ€

Zach continued to provoke her, โ€œI drove here, you know. How about I give you a lift? No charge, itโ€™s on me.โ€

โ€œAre you out of your mind, Graham? Either move or get out of my way already! Donโ€™t waste my time!โ€ Winter snapped. Her crab rolls were getting cold!

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t wannaโ€ฆโ€ he goaded, stepping closer.

Winter shoved him aside, not in the mood for his antics. โ€œDonโ€™t push your luck with me, Zach, or I swear-โ€

โ€œOr what?โ€ he challenged.

โ€œOr Iโ€™ll break your third leg!โ€ she threatened, glaring at him fiercely.

Zachโ€™s eyes went wide, and he clamped his legs together in shock. โ€œAre you even a woman? How can you say stuff like that!โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s being a woman got to do with it? Thereโ€™s no rule about what women can or canโ€™t say,โ€ Winter retorted, unfazed.

Zach opened his mouth but found himself at a loss for words.

Winterโ€™s patience was wearing thin. โ€œEnough already, move! I have something important to do!โ€

โ€œRushing off to see your little boy toy, are you?โ€ he pressed.

โ€œNo, seriously, Zach, whatโ€™s up with you today? Why are you acting so childish, and when will you drop it?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve got some nerve!โ€ Zach shot back. โ€œIโ€™ve been messaging you for days! Why didnโ€™t you reply? And you didnโ€™t even answer my calls! Do you know how unprofessional that is?โ€

Winter rolled her eyes, utterly exasperated.

โ€œThose were messages? โ€˜What are you up to?โ€™ โ€˜Had lunch yet?โ€™ โ€˜Did you sleep well?โ€™ Or random emojis like picking your nose or eatingโ€ฆ stuff. What exactly am I supposed to say to that?โ€

Zach stood there, speechless.

โ€œCome on, Zach. Iโ€™ve been working my butt off, doing overtime for a whole week. Today is my day off! I donโ€™t have time for this nonsenseโ€“I want to eat and rest!โ€
