Listen to this chapter:

On the other end of the phone, Mason remained silent for a long time. โ€œโ€ฆYouโ€™re really planning to build your own lab?โ€ โ€œOf course!โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re not just acting on impulse?โ€ Madison responded, โ€œDefinitely not! Weโ€™re serious about this!โ€ โ€œAlright, ten million, right? Iโ€™ll transfer it to your account in a bit.โ€ โ€œWow! Thanks, Dad! Love you!โ€ Mason chuckled happily in reply. That evening, Madison proudly shared a screenshot of the bank transfer in their group chat. The bright string of seven zeroes was hard to miss. Madison texted, โ€œAll set. Hehe.โ€ Seeing that little โ€œHeheโ€ made Sebastian smile, as he could almost picture how pleased she must have been while sending the message. It was clear that he needed to step up too. He pocketed his phone and walked over to the couch. โ€œGrandpa, itโ€™s been a while since we played chess. How about a game?โ€

โ€œSure! Youโ€™re rarely home, and itโ€™s been ages since anyone played a proper game with me.โ€ Sebastianโ€™s grandfather, Samuel Landon, got up from the couch with his cane and sat at the chessboard. They played two rounds, each one as intense as the last. Sebastian discreetly let his grandfather win, making Samuel grin from ear to ear. โ€œSeb, youโ€™ve lost again. Whatโ€™s up with you today? You donโ€™t seem to be on your game.โ€ Sebastian sighed dramatically and pretended to be troubled. โ€œClearly, your chess skills have improved. Be honest, have you been secretly practicing without telling me?โ€ Flattery would never fail. Sure enough, Samuel laughed heartily. Sebastian grinned. โ€œThereโ€™s just no way. Letโ€™s play another game!โ€ This time, Sebastian didnโ€™t hold back. Naturally, he won in the end. Samuel huffed, sounding a bit like a sulking child. โ€œYou said I was practicing, but itโ€™s obvious youโ€™re the one whoโ€™s been practicing! Iโ€™m done, itโ€™s no fun anymore!โ€

After a brief pause, he asked, โ€œItโ€™s not a weekend or holiday, so why are you home today? And even offering to play chess with me? Come on, spill itโ€“whatโ€™s going on?โ€ โ€œUhโ€ฆโ€

Nothing ever escaped his grandfatherโ€™s sharp eyes. Sebastian had known this all along. So, without holding back, he told him everything about the academic bullying and malicious pressure they had been facing at college. โ€œโ€ฆRather than suffer in silence, we thought it would be better to solve the problem at its root. Weโ€™re planning to build our own lab. Weโ€™ve got the money and the land, but we still need approval from the relevant departmentsโ€ฆโ€ He paused here, stealing glances at Samuel, his face practically saying, โ€œIโ€™ve laid it all out, now please agree to help us.โ€ But Samuel still didnโ€™t say anything. He just sat there, his expression dark and thoughtful. Sebastian didnโ€™t dare rush him. Instead, he busied himself tidying up the chessboard, feeling a mix of anxiety and anticipation. After what felt like forever, Samuel finally sighed. โ€œI never imagined the academic world had become so messyโ€ฆ If everything youโ€™ve told me is true, then Iโ€™ll support you in building something for yourself. As for the approval processโ€ฆ you all go ahead with your plans. Donโ€™t worry about the rest.โ€ โ€œThank you, Grandpa!โ€ โ€œRememberโ€“if youโ€™re going to do it, do it right. Donโ€™t give up halfway and make a fool of yourself.โ€ โ€œAbsolutely! You can count on me!โ€ Despite some ups and downs, Sebastianโ€™s side of things ultimately worked out perfectly. That evening, he followed Madisonโ€™s message in the group chat with his own. โ€œAll set. Hehe.โ€ Unexpectedly, Miranda, the one who was supposed to have the smoothest time, ran into some trouble.
