Chapter 112: First Time Seeing Nathaniel Coax Someone
Unable to bear listening to Nathaniel any longer, Cecilia abruptly set down her spoon. โIโm full,โ she declared, rising to leave.
Only then did Nathaniel realize she was upset. He stood up and followed her, grasping her wrist. โWhy are you angry?โ
Cecilia withdrew her hand. โIโm not angry. Youโre absolutely right, Mr. Rainsworth. Itโs my best friend who wasnโt lacking in expertise. Otherwise, she wouldnโt have been sent to the police station by your subordinate and detained for a day.โ
Nathaniel lowered himself, explaining, โI didnโt know that the lawyer Stella mentioned was your friend.โ Cecilia listened silently.
For the first time, Nathaniel was at a loss. He could only coax, โTell me what I can do to make amends for her detention? Iโll have someone apologize to her.โ
Before Cecilia could respond, a cough sounded from the doorway. Mason stood there, his face shocked. The temperature around Nathaniel instantly dropped.
โWhy havenโt you left yet?โ Nathaniel demanded.
โI came to see what else needs to be arranged, Mr. Rainsworth,โ Mason replied, standing awkwardly. Since Ceciliaโs departure, the burden of managing Nathanielโs demanding lifestyle had fallen on Mason. Heโd discovered his employer was exceedingly fussyโupset by even minor deviations from his routine. Nathaniel had even fired a meal delivery person for improperly heated milk. Many part-timers had found the job unbearable, despite the high pay. Mason realized Ceciliaโs incredible patience in tolerating Nathanielโs eccentricities. Heโd never heard her express dissatisfaction. Overhearing their conversation was his first time seeing Nathaniel attempt to coax someone.
โYou donโt need to come anymore in the future,โ Nathaniel stated.
Mason was taken aback. โIโll strive to do even better, Mr. Rainsworth.โ Heโd worked diligently for decades; was he truly to be dismissed over such a trivial matter?
โWhat I meant was for you to focus on your main job. You no longer need to come to Daltonia Villa every day,โ Nathaniel clarified. Mason sighed in relief. โUnderstood.โ
As Mason was leaving, Nathaniel called him back. โHowโs the child doing?โ
โHeโs been very well-behaved since last night. The housekeeper said heโs particularly sensible, able to bathe and dress himself,โ Mason replied, pausing. โHe also asked when you would be visiting him.โ
Nathanielโs expression turned complicated. โYou should head back to the office first.โ He coughed violently.
โMr. Rainsworth, shall I call your personal doctor?โ Mason asked, noticing Nathanielโs poor complexion and persistent cough.
โNo, itโs okay. Iโm fine,โ Nathaniel replied, his gaze falling on Ceciliaโs retreating back.
Mason ventured, โMr. Rainsworth, I think you should let Ms. Smith know if you have feelings for her. Otherwise, she might be oblivious.โ
โDonโt meddle in my personal affairs,โ Nathaniel snapped. Mason, realizing heโd overstepped, lowered his gaze.
