Chapter 112: First Time Seeing Nathaniel Coax Someone

Unable to bear listening to Nathaniel any longer, Cecilia abruptly set down her spoon. โ€œIโ€™m full,โ€ she declared, rising to leave.

Only then did Nathaniel realize she was upset. He stood up and followed her, grasping her wrist. โ€œWhy are you angry?โ€

Cecilia withdrew her hand. โ€œIโ€™m not angry. Youโ€™re absolutely right, Mr. Rainsworth. Itโ€™s my best friend who wasnโ€™t lacking in expertise. Otherwise, she wouldnโ€™t have been sent to the police station by your subordinate and detained for a day.โ€

Nathaniel lowered himself, explaining, โ€œI didnโ€™t know that the lawyer Stella mentioned was your friend.โ€ Cecilia listened silently.

For the first time, Nathaniel was at a loss. He could only coax, โ€œTell me what I can do to make amends for her detention? Iโ€™ll have someone apologize to her.โ€

Before Cecilia could respond, a cough sounded from the doorway. Mason stood there, his face shocked. The temperature around Nathaniel instantly dropped.

โ€œWhy havenโ€™t you left yet?โ€ Nathaniel demanded.

โ€œI came to see what else needs to be arranged, Mr. Rainsworth,โ€ Mason replied, standing awkwardly. Since Ceciliaโ€™s departure, the burden of managing Nathanielโ€™s demanding lifestyle had fallen on Mason. Heโ€™d discovered his employer was exceedingly fussyโ€”upset by even minor deviations from his routine. Nathaniel had even fired a meal delivery person for improperly heated milk. Many part-timers had found the job unbearable, despite the high pay. Mason realized Ceciliaโ€™s incredible patience in tolerating Nathanielโ€™s eccentricities. Heโ€™d never heard her express dissatisfaction. Overhearing their conversation was his first time seeing Nathaniel attempt to coax someone.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to come anymore in the future,โ€ Nathaniel stated.

Mason was taken aback. โ€œIโ€™ll strive to do even better, Mr. Rainsworth.โ€ Heโ€™d worked diligently for decades; was he truly to be dismissed over such a trivial matter?

โ€œWhat I meant was for you to focus on your main job. You no longer need to come to Daltonia Villa every day,โ€ Nathaniel clarified. Mason sighed in relief. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

As Mason was leaving, Nathaniel called him back. โ€œHowโ€™s the child doing?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s been very well-behaved since last night. The housekeeper said heโ€™s particularly sensible, able to bathe and dress himself,โ€ Mason replied, pausing. โ€œHe also asked when you would be visiting him.โ€

Nathanielโ€™s expression turned complicated. โ€œYou should head back to the office first.โ€ He coughed violently.

โ€œMr. Rainsworth, shall I call your personal doctor?โ€ Mason asked, noticing Nathanielโ€™s poor complexion and persistent cough.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m fine,โ€ Nathaniel replied, his gaze falling on Ceciliaโ€™s retreating back.

Mason ventured, โ€œMr. Rainsworth, I think you should let Ms. Smith know if you have feelings for her. Otherwise, she might be oblivious.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t meddle in my personal affairs,โ€ Nathaniel snapped. Mason, realizing heโ€™d overstepped, lowered his gaze.
