Chapter 113: Chose to Delude Himself

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

Mason had always been circumspect. He cautioned Nathaniel only to prevent future regrets. Over the past four or five years since Ceciliaโ€™s disappearance, he knew Nathaniel better than anyone. Nathaniel didn't blame him and returned home after Mason left.

At that moment, Cecilia received a call from Vivian. Vivian had been released from custody the previous night.

โ€œCeci, did you see Nathaniel?โ€ Vivian sensed something was amiss; sheโ€™d called Cecilia the previous night, but there was no answer.

โ€œYes, I spoke with him yesterday,โ€ Cecilia admitted.

โ€œDid he give you a hard time?โ€ Vivian asked anxiously.

โ€œNo.โ€

Seeing Nathaniel enter, Cecilia said, โ€œIโ€™ll talk to you later,โ€ and ended the call.

Nathaniel asked, โ€œWho called?โ€

โ€œMy friend, Vivian.โ€

Cecilia stood, looking at him. โ€œWhereโ€™s Eli? I need to see him. His health is poor; he needs a doctor.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a medical team with him.โ€ He was refusing her request.

โ€œHeโ€™s my son, and I must see him!โ€

Cecilia knew pleading was futile if he was adamant. Truthfully, she was terrified. She feared Nathaniel might not believe her and order a paternity test with Elliot, revealing her lie and Elliot's true parentage.

โ€œStay home, and Iโ€™ll ensure you see him. Anything else you want to say besides that?โ€

Cecilia looked at him, puzzled.

โ€œWhat have you been doing abroad all these years? And why did you return?โ€

Nathaniel was most perplexed by her appearance at the charity auction and subsequent work with Rainsworth Group. He didn't believe in coincidences; lies required more lies to maintain.

โ€œAs I said, I wanted a new life. As for returningโ€ฆโ€ Cecilia met his gaze. โ€œWould you believe me if I said it was resentment? I couldnโ€™t accept sacrificing so much for you, only to be ignored. So, I returned to see your attitude.โ€

She reasoned only this explanation might convince him; she believed he was self-absorbed, certain sheโ€™d never leave him, let alone fall for another.

Nathanielโ€™s eyes were scrutinizing. โ€œThatโ€™s all?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Cecilia nodded.

Nathanielโ€™s heart sank. It wasnโ€™t her words, but the look in her eyes. Years in business had honed his ability to detect deception, yet he saw no resentment.

Nathanielโ€™s throat tightened. โ€œLetโ€™s not dwell on the past. Letโ€™s live in peace from now on.โ€

He left. He chose to delude himself.

Though Nathaniel kept Cecilia at Daltonia Villa, he didnโ€™t restrict her. She could leave at any time. After she departed, Svenโ€™s car emerged from a hidden spot.

โ€œMs. Smith, are you alright?โ€ Sven asked, concerned. He hadn't heard what transpired.

Cecilia nodded. โ€œYes, Iโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œReturning to Ninth Ville?โ€ Sven asked.

โ€œTake me to Vivianโ€™s.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Sven drove. Cecilia gazed out the window, her mind replaying the previous nightโ€™s events.
