Chapter 128: Saved Someone Before

After getting into the car, Nathaniel glanced back at the hospital. โ€œWhat did you and Zachary talk about after I left?โ€

โ€œHe asked if I had saved someone when I was in university,โ€ Cecilia admitted readily.

Saved someone? Nathaniel remembered Stella rescuing him and his mother from a car accident during her university years. โ€œAnd then?โ€

โ€œAnd then you arrived.โ€ Cecilia preferred not to dwell on it, especially with the late hour and Nathanielโ€™s upcoming anniversary event.

Seeing no reason to return to the company, she gazed at the falling leaves outside. โ€œI want to go home.โ€

โ€œJoin me at the anniversary event tonight,โ€ he said.

Surprise flickered in Ceciliaโ€™s eyes. Nathaniel offered no explanation, simply instructing the driver to proceed to the venue.

Before the event began, he arranged for Cecilia to be in a private room. She changed into a turquoise gown, radiating an ethereal beauty, seemingly untouched by the world.

Nathaniel lingered at the doorway. As he watched her, a stunned expression crossed her face. His Adamโ€™s apple bobbed. โ€œWait for me here. Weโ€™ll go back together tonight.โ€

Cecilia looked up, nodded, and said, โ€œAll right.โ€

Her obedience stirred complex emotions in Nathaniel. Without another word, he left.

Stella and Elena arrived early for the company anniversary.

โ€œYouโ€™re saying Ceciliaโ€™s back at Daltonia Villa?โ€ Elena asked.

โ€œYes. Iโ€™m not sure whatโ€™s happening, but sheโ€™s probably bothering Nathaniel again. Theyโ€™re still married, and sheโ€™s difficult,โ€ Stella said, omitting Nathanielโ€™s role in Ceciliaโ€™s return.

Elena sipped her red wine. Remembering a previous ambiguous encounter between Cecilia and Nathaniel, a worry flickered in her eyes. โ€œWhen will she finally leave my son alone?โ€ Turning to Stella, she added, โ€œSince Nathanielโ€™s marrying you, you should try to get pregnant soon. Iโ€™ll help you today.โ€

Stellaโ€™s eyes shone with gratitude. โ€œI wonโ€™t disappoint you.โ€ Elena nodded.

After her secretary announced Nathanielโ€™s arrival, Elena bypassed other guests and went straight to him. Stella watched nervously from a distance. Nathaniel immediately became the center of attention. Elena had her secretary lead him aside and brought him wine. โ€œNathaniel, the companyโ€™s success is largely due to you. My father and grandfather send their regards.โ€

Nathaniel found it hard to refuse.

Meanwhile, Cecilia sat in a second-floor private room overlooking the event. It was one-way glass; she could see out, but not in. Sipping wine, she spotted Elena, Stella, and Nathaniel surrounded by bodyguards. Then she froze. Sheโ€™d just seen a waiter slip something into Elenaโ€™s wine, which Elena then gave to Nathaniel. Stella was approaching them.

Even a fool could see Elena and Stellaโ€™s plan. Cecilia stood to leave, but a bodyguard stopped her. โ€œMs. Smith, Mr. Rainsworth asked you to wait.โ€

Cecilia winced. โ€œCanโ€™t I even go to the restroom?โ€ Her concern wasnโ€™t for Nathaniel, but for seizing an opportunity, if her suspicions were correct. The bodyguard, unable to truly restrain her, allowed her to leave.
