Chapter 334 My Son-in-Law
Nathaniel returned home, finding Cecilia nowhere. He searched every corner of the house, a wave of frustration surging through him. He was accustomed to her leaving a note, but sheโd vanished without a word.
In the kitchen, Ceciliaโs caregiver bustled about, cooking. She kept nervously glancing at the visibly upset Nathaniel, who was calling out for Cecilia. Finally, unable to bear the tension, she spoke. โMs. Smith might not be back for a few days. She instructed me to care for the elderly.โ
Nathaniel turned toward the unfamiliar voice. โWho are you?โ he demanded sharply.
โSir, Ms. Smith hired me as a caregiver,โ she explained, stepping forward and quickly realizing his blindness. โSir, Iโll have to charge extra to care for two people.โ
His expression darkened. โWhen Ms. Smith hired me, she only mentioned the elderly. She said nothing about a blind person,โ she continued.
Nathanielโs anger flared. โI donโt need anyoneโs care,โ he retorted coldly.
The caregiver was undeterred. โYouโre blind! How could you possibly not need care? Youโll pay extra!โ
Nathanielโs patience snapped. โGet lost,โ he said menacingly.
The caregiver was taken aback. โWhy are you yelling? Ms. Smith invited me! No one can fire me! Besides, who will care for the woman?โ she argued.
Ten minutes later, bodyguards discreetly positioned around the house escorted the caregiver out. The commotion startled Martha, who had been resting. She saw the caregiver outside, protesting loudly. โFine, you wonโt pay more, but you canโt just drag me out! Iโm calling the police! Iโm suing!โ she wailed.
Nathaniel, unused to such audacity, felt a headache coming on. He stepped outside, his tone icy. โGag her and toss her onto the street.โ
The middle-aged caregiver was feisty. She assumed he wouldnโt dare touch her, even considering extorting money. โGood heavens, no respect for the law!โ she cried. โSomeoneโs trying to rip off my clothes! A blind man was flirting with a married woman!โ
Her loud voice attracted neighbors, who gathered, whispering and pointing. The bodyguards struggled to gag her; she bit them. Nathanielโs anger boiled over.
Just then, Martha, despite her exhaustion, surprisingly quickly slapped the caregiver.
โMy son-in-law is handsome and young,โ Martha snapped. โEven blind, he wouldnโt be interested in an old hag like you! Look at yourself! Do you think youโre worthy of him?โ
The room erupted in laughter. Martha pulled out money and tossed it at the woman. โHereโs your pay. Now scram, and donโt return.โ
Defeated, the woman picked up the money. โYour blind son-in-law is fierce; I wonโt take more tasks from your household,โ she muttered, walking away.
The neighbors offered words of consolation. โMartha, if you hadnโt mentioned it, we wouldnโt have noticed. Your son-in-law is handsome, like a movie star,โ one commented.
โExactly, clean, bright, tall, and handsome,โ another agreed.
โThat caregiver targets the elderly. Itโs a relief sheโs gone,โ added a third.
โAnd his friends are quite handsome too. Do they have girlfriends? Should we set them up?โ someone suggested, referring to Nathanielโs bodyguards.
The usually stoic bodyguards blushed under the neighborsโ attention, glancing shyly at Nathaniel.
