Chapter 366: If They Are Ugly
Given Nathaniel's cooperation, Cecilia felt it unfair to continue giving him a hard time. She assigned him tasks within his capabilities, some secretly handled by Mason.
That evening, at dinner, Nathaniel announced, "I've found a job. I'll handle household expenses from now on." He returned Cecilia's living expense card. He vaguely remembered it wasn't given out of concern.
Cecilia, puzzled by his job announcement, examined the card. Jonathan echoed her question, "Mr. Rainsworth, what kind of job have you found?"
Nathaniel's new company was already established. He used "treatment" appointments as a cover for office visits. "Charitable aid for the disabled," he replied solemnly, his blindness necessitating the excuse.
Astonishment rippled around the table. Cecilia, understanding his past better than anyone, knew his philanthropy was strategic, not genuine. His new employment was unbelievable. Seeing his genuine effort, she decided to adjust her perception.
"How much does it pay? Just use my card," she offered, her own financial situation improved.
"It's fine," he replied, leaving the card untouched before departing. Cecilia didn't mind; they were a family, and he should contribute. She took back the card, but neglected to check the balanceโfinding it untouched.
The next day was Christmas. Cecilia and Charlotte had decided on a domestic premiere for the song, ready to assess its reception. Cecilia slept well and woke early, only to find Nathaniel already leaving.
"Can you manage going out alone?" she asked casually, noting his neat attire.
He stopped. "Someone from the company will pick me up," he replied.
Cecilia was surprised. Most people wouldn't have a company car, let alone risk salary deductions for tardiness. His privileged treatment shocked her.
After he left, Cecilia prepared breakfast. The preschool's distance necessitated Sven's help, a request he readily accepted as part of his protective duty.
Outside, Nathaniel found Mason and the driver waiting. In the car, he seriously asked Mason, "What does Cecilia's bodyguard look like?" His incomplete memory prevented recognition of Sven, despite past inquiries.
Mason described Sven vividly: "Mixed heritage, striking features, tall, imposingโฆ handsome, in short."
Nathaniel's face darkened. "Find me some reliable bodyguards. Someone averageโฆ preferably ugly. It's safer that way," he added, leaving Mason dumbfounded.
