Chapter 373: It Will Not Happen
Cecilia shook her head. โNo, what's up?โ
โItโs nothing. I just havenโt seen him in a long time. Why donโt you invite him over for dinner again sometime?โ
Cecilia, having also noticed Calvinโs attentions, relayed her last conversation with him to Martha. โMartha, Calvin is just being a friend. Donโt make it difficult for him.โ
Friend? Martha, despite her age, possessed sharp eyesight. She couldn't miss the affection Calvin held for Cecilia. Had Calvin abandoned his pursuit because Nathaniel was home? This thought worried Martha.
โI understand,โ she said. โBut Ceci, you need to think about yourself. Youโre expecting again. How can you take care of so many children?โ
โI have money now. Iโm not afraid,โ Cecilia replied optimistically.
Marthaโs concern wasnโt about hiring help; she longed for Cecilia to find love and happiness. Knowing Ceciliaโs steadfast nature, however, Martha didnโt press the issue.
The day flew by. The following day, Cecilia returned to Tudela. Watching her constant journeys, Martha felt heartbroken.
โIโll go with you,โ Nathaniel said solemnly at breakfast. He worried about the child.
โItโs fine. You should focus on your work,โ Cecilia firmly declined.
โThen bring the bodyguards.โ Knowing Cecilia would refuse his company, Nathaniel offered a compromise.
โSvenโs company is enough,โ Cecilia countered, feeling that a large entourage would be too conspicuous and uncomfortable.
After breakfast, she found the bodyguards waiting. Sven was apart, in a separate car. At her appearance, they bowed. โMrs. Rainsworth.โ
Too weary to interact, Cecilia went straight to Sven. โSven, letโs go.โ
โAll right.โ
Sven drove, with four bodyguards trailing. Cecilia called Nathaniel. โTell your bodyguards to leave.โ
โTheyโre under your command now,โ Nathaniel replied gravely. โYou can give them orders.โ
Cecilia was startled. Under her command? She stopped the car and addressed the following bodyguards. โStop following me and go back.โ
โUnderstood.โ The lead bodyguard immediately obeyed.
Inside, Nathaniel held his phone, his face a mask of quiet resentment after Cecilia's abrupt call. The previous day, heโd asked Mason to tempt Sven, but Sven had refused. This only deepened his unease about the bodyguard. Looks like Iโll have to accompany Ceci to Tudela.
Martha, still awake, noticed Nathaniel's pensive state. โWhatโs the matter?โ she asked.
โItโs nothingโฆ Iโll be working night shifts for the next few days, so I wonโt be coming home.โ
Night shifts? Martha was taken aback, her conviction that he was unworthy of Cecilia strengthening.
โGo ahead, but donโt upset Ceci. If you do, be the one to ask for a divorce. Donโt waste any more of her time.โ
Nathaniel rose. โDonโt worry. It wonโt happen.โ His voice resonated with unshakeable certainty.
