Chapter 437: Thrown Into the River
Nicholas was about to speak when Nathaniel passed him. He immediately questioned the servant who had been inside earlier.
โMr. Adrian got drunk and harassed Mrs. Rainsworth. Mr. Nathaniel had him thrown into the river.โ
Harassed Cecilia? Nicholasโs eyes turned cold. โNo one stopped it?โ
The servant shook her head. โNo one dared to. Everyone was afraid.โ
โWhat about Cassandra?โ
The servant scratched her head. โMaybe she didnโt see it.โ
Nicholas understood instantly. How could she not have seen it? She simply didnโt want to be involved. He hadnโt liked Cassandra much, but now felt a growing disgust. How could she pretend to be oblivious to the incident at their engagement party?
Cecilia returned to their residence with Nathaniel, who held her close, knowing she was traumatized.
โFrom now on, you donโt have to go to places like that. Just stay home.โ
Ceciliaโs emotions calmed. โThank you. If Nathaniel hadnโt shown up, Adrian might have done something worse.โ
Nathaniel said softly, โRemember, weโre married. As your husband, this is what I should do.โ
Hearing this, Cecilia no longer resented his having people follow and photograph her. โFrom now on, if anything happens, tell me directly. No more sarcasm.โ
Nathaniel agreed, โOkay, I promise.โ
After clearing the air, Cecilia rose from his embrace, ready to return to the bedroom. Nathaniel stood, intending to follow, but Cecilia said, โYouโre sleeping in the living room tonight.โ
Nathaniel was left outside, feeling helpless.
Meanwhile, by the frozen river, Adrianโs clothes were stripped off; he shivered uncontrollably, his lips purple.
โYou people, I wonโt forget this! Youโll pay for this!โ he shouted defiantly.
Seeing his stubbornness, the bodyguards realized he didnโt understand the situationโs gravity. A few broke the ice with a machine and dragged Adrian toward the water, throwing him in.
โAh!โ He screamed, hitting the water, unable to speak. As he struggled to the surface, the bodyguards repeatedly pushed his head underwater.
It dawned on Adrian that Nathaniel wanted him dead. โI was wrong! Please, tell Nathaniel I wonโt dare do it again!โ
A bodyguard called Nathaniel. Lying alone in the living room, he was in a foul mood. โKeep going! Make sure he learns his lesson!โ He didnโt care if Adrian died.
The bodyguards continued their brutal treatment until Adrian was too exhausted to beg. They wouldnโt stop without Nathanielโs order. A luxury car arrived; Niel, leaning on his cane, emerged with Adrianโs son, Felix.
โDaddy!โ Felix cried, running to Adrian.
Niel commanded coldly, โStop! Are you really going to let this end in a death?โ
The bodyguards immediately informed Nathaniel, ceasing only after receiving his response.
That night, Adrian was rushed to the ICU, barely surviving. Back at Rainsworth Manor, Cecilia lay in bed, calling Martha and their children.
