Chapter 438 Arranged Marriage
Martha reassured Cecilia, telling her that her health had recently improved. Cecilia then called Elliot, but the nurse said the child was asleep. She next called Jonathan. A video call connected, revealing a luxuriously decorated children's room. Jonathan, in a sharp little suit, appeared on screen.
โJon?โ
โMommy, sorry, Iโve been busy,โ he replied.
โAre you at Ms. Kennedyโs house?โ Cecilia asked.
Jonathan nodded. โTo be precise, itโs the house Ms. Kennedyโs father gifted me.โ
Roland, who adored Jonathan, was urging him to continue their chess game. Before Cecilia could speak further, Roland called out, โJonathan, who are you talking to? Come on and finish the chess game with Grandpa.โ Jonathan apologized and ended the call. He had been extremely busy. Roland not only played chess and read with him but also enjoyed showing him off to his elderly friends.
After closing the computer, Jonathan went to the living room. Roland sat with a troubled expression, studying the chessboard, clearly losing.
โJonathan, you didnโt trick me, did you? Iโve heard you can play chess on your phone. Were you using it against me?โ
They had played ten games, and Roland hadn't won a single one. Losing to a four-year-old was embarrassing.
โGrandpa, if youโre still not convinced, we can play another round. You can search me to make sure Iโm not cheating,โ Jonathan offered. Heโd considered letting Roland win, but the old man was too sharp. As a chess player, he needed to maintain his competitive spirit.
Roland, seeing his grandson in the suit he'd bought him, realized a hidden phone was impossible. Jonathan played too quickly for cheating.
โYou must have inherited it from me. I was just as smart when I was your age.โ
Roland laughed, already planning to show off Jonathan to his friends again. He would remember to bring a chessboard so Jonathan could recoup his losses.
At home, Vivian poured tea. โItโs almost ten oโclock. Time to go to bed,โ she said.
โYou can go to bed yourself. Tomorrow, youโve got another date. Donโt mess it up,โ Roland said, eager to dismiss her.
Vivian felt helpless and was about to leave when Rolandโs phone rang. It was George, Zacharyโs grandfather.
โHey, Old Mr. Sinclair! Whatโs up?โ Roland answered on speakerphone.
โWell, in two days, Nicholas is getting engaged, right? I was thinking, why donโt we strengthen the bond between our families too? Letโs have Zach and Vivian get engaged as well. What do you think?โ George asked.
Roland was surprised by George's enthusiasm, having worried the prominent Sinclair family might reject Vivian due to her past. Despite Vivianโs silent objections, Roland readily agreed. โSure, sure! But Vivian made some mistakes when she was youngerโฆโ He hesitated, intending to mention Vivianโs child.
However, George interrupted, โI already know. Zach told me everything. Heโs no angel himself. As long as Vivian doesnโt mind him, weโre good to go. We can announce the engagement the day after tomorrow, right after Nicholasโ event. Weโll hold the engagement party later.โ
โNo problem!โ Roland exclaimed, beaming.
