Chapter 474: One Last Thing
The living room fell silent. Paula was astonished that her former nanny, Martha, dared to speak to her so disrespectfully. She raised her hand to strike Martha.
The caregiver intervened, saying, โMadam, this elderly lady is in poor health. You shouldnโt hit her. If you refuse to stop, Iโll call the police.โ
Paulaโs hand froze. A cold laugh escaped her lips. โThis elderly lady? She's a destitute woman nobody wanted! She was only lucky enough to care for my daughter. Now that my daughter and son-in-law are supporting her, she thinks she's wealthy!โ
The caregiver was surprised. Sheโd assumed Martha was Ceciliaโs mother. She hadnโt expected to see this woman. While they resembled each other, their temperaments were vastly different. Paulaโs words were sharp and harsh.
Since Paula was her employer's mother, the caregiver remained silent, offering only basic care.
Faced with Paulaโs mockery, Martha retorted, โThough I may be poor, I have my dignity. I donโt rely on my children for survival, unlike some people.โ
Paula now understood where Ceciliaโs temper came from. She raised her hand again and, before the caregiver could react, pushed Martha to the ground.
Cough, cough, cough!
Martha, already in poor health, began coughing violently. The caregiver rushed to her side, anxiously asking, โMadam, are you all right?โ
Martha couldnโt stop coughing. Paula watched from above, unfazed. Seeing Martha near death, Paula called Cecilia, stating, โIf you dare seduce Nicholas again or sue me, prepare to collect your nannyโs body.โ She always kept her word.
Paula hung up and left. Cecilia, upon receiving the call, rushed home, immediately phoning the caregiver.
โHowโs Martha?โ
โMs. Smith, she was pushed and has been coughing. Sheโs much better now.โ
โThatโs good. Iโll be right back.โ
Cecilia arranged for a doctor to examine Martha. The doctor diagnosed high blood pressure and muscle and bone injuries.
Cecilia looked at the elderly woman, her heart aching. Sheโd been gone a short while, yet this had happened.
โMartha, are you okay?โ Cecilia asked.
Martha opened her eyes, reassuring her, โIโm fine, donโt worry.โ
Cecilia embraced her. โMartha, please never leave me.โ
Martha had been like a mother to her.
โAll right, I wonโt.โ
Privately, Martha worried. Paula's audacity made her wonder what bullying Cecilia endured behind her back. Knowing her time was short, Martha determined to do one last thing for Cecilia. She wanted to avoid burdening Cecilia and fulfill her maternal instincts.
โCeci, did you find any evidence of Paula and Magnus transferring the Smith familyโs assets?โ
Cecilia, unsure why Martha asked, shook her head. โAfter all these years, much evidence is lost.โ
Martha had a plan. โCeci, I want to visit some old friends tomorrow.โ
